New Diary.

As my usual P1JP diary from Letts is no longer made, I am thinking of using a pocket-size Moleskine. However, I would like to know if the paper in these is suitable for average fountain-pen ink. In my diaries, I use Parker or Waterman black and blue-black most of the time, in a 45-year-old Parker 45 with fine italic nib. This combination has been fine on Letts paper, so I am hopeful it would work on Moleskine paper as well. Any advice appreciated, thank-you.

The best of all the inks I use in my Moleskines is Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black but their Black works OK as well. I just don't like black ink! As you seem to use a fine nib, you'll have even more success. And of course, the Pelikan can be got relatively easily here in the UK.

I fount that using anything other that a fine nib on my Moleskines has showthrough. If using a broader nib like my 1.1 or 1.9 italic, I have to use a faster drying ink. You just have to play with what you have to see what works best for you. Today for instance, I used my Noodler's Konrad with a 1.1 mm Montevista bib and Noodler's Whaleman Sepia. That worked well.

Have you looked at any of the websites selling Japanese items? Several companies make pocket-size notebooks that take ink well.

The few times I have used Moleskin with anything but my Japanese fine nibs I get bleed-through and sometimes feathering.

 

Personally I would not recommend mixing FPs and Moleskin.

I have never had good luck with Moleskine, too much show/bleed through. Regardless of nib/ink combinations. There are other manufacturers that make pocket sized journals that are similar in design. Look at Leuchtturm 1917(my favorite), Apica or Midori. IMHO, those three make similar products with superior paper.

Moleskines are pretty, but in my experience, almost useless with fountain pens. I've got a Moleskine that i use to jot things down in, with a Lamy Safari <EF> , and you can read everything you wrote on one page through the back of the same page. Feathering and show-through of the highest degree. I'd recommend Rhodia or Clairefontaine.

The Moleskines with lined or quad paper do show through a good bit, but the unlined ones with heavier sketch paper work a lot better for me.
