Waterman Metalis

I bought a set of 6 of these pens on eBay 4-5 years ago, all for under $50. They came in 6 different colors, if I recall correctly. I gave 5 of them away, and stuck this last one in the drawer. Inked it today, and was surprised at how great it writes. Obviously a steel nib (F), plastic parts everywhere else, but a genuine Waterman nonetheless. Good medium size, light feel, a lot of fun to write with, and it accepts the Waterman converter so you can use any kind of ink.

Does anyone have any history on this? I can find nothing on any Internet search. Another name it may go by? I'd love to pick up more, and give 'em out to friends, if I could still pick 'em up for under $10 apiece. Thanks!

looks like a waterman kultur..

metalis may refer to its metal like finish.

as you said they are good, and as they have been discontinued, I might be difficult for you to get that under 10 dollars price again

It seems that the Kultur, because of the resemblance now often is sold as a Phileas...So they are sold at ridiculous prices.

The Kultur was als the basis for several of the Harley Davidson by Waterman pens.

Waterman gave some (maybe all) of the Kultur color 'families' names. I did not know that these opaque, frosted metallic colors with hard surface and matte clip were called Metalis. Thank you for enlightening us.

How nice to have the original package in that condition!

I just checked mine. I've got 5 colors of Metalis with the matte clip, and 3 other colors with a chrome clip.

I've often seen the frosted, completely opaque finish referred to as metallic. Probably named by the same marketing wizard who came up with the fairly common "Reflectis"

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
