Making A Pen Case

The wood is so unique, the box is so beautiful, could you show the suede lining?

I have a feeling it is purple, worthy of trying Mary Poppins flying object technique or Star Trek transporteur technology.

Looking forward to see, more collaborations, between you and your son.

Thanks, The box is darker in real life than the pictures the catch is protected by masking tape in the later pictures. The catch and hinges are made by Ian Hawthorn here are his websites

I wondered how the box would be closed, following the link to the hardware store, I discovered cache closures for boxes, I am familiar with them on other items, but this was new to me.

Thank you Michael for enabling more pleasant learning, today.

Another year draws to a close and I am now a year older :) Today has been quite chilled.

I did manage to finish my sons desk box.

Happy New Year and thank you for sharing all your beautiful projects!

It seems that an Happy Birthday is in order as well as an appreciation for the willingness to share your and the U.K's struggles.

Especially about that wretched virus, which we know, since the beginning has an uncanny ability to mutate faster than "influencers" personas, depending on the product they are hawking.

I am sorry for your loss and so admire the way your transformed, in some manners, your sorrow into beautiful objects.

Many Blessings and good thoughts to your family, friends and acquaintances.

The large case project has two options for the pen trays, The first being for pens that are allready in trays. This is the mockup of the shelving system for inside the case. There would of course be a lot more shelves, but this will give the idea.  The piece of wood across the top will be replaced by metal work which will also allow magnets to be used to help with the closure of the flap at the front.

The second option is to make interlocking trays to stack inside the case which I have made before. Some tie down straps will also be required.

Keeping the wieght down is very important.

Are you going to set up both or just do a mockup to wait what the client want?

Thanks Anne-Sophie, Actually there is no customer for this project, This case is a proof of concept for a potential full custom case but that may have gone in a different direction now.

If I am going to finish this case I will be making the stacking trays from mdf with hand formed plastic inserts covered in faux suede.

The original case had a metal strap at each end to join the front and rear panels. This provided a lot of support. This is on the outside of the replacement piece I have made, rather than just adding another piece of metal across the front I have made a single piece that replaces the sides and has a front piece included

This picture shows the replacement piece sitting on the shelf its home is at the top of the case but I could not support it in place. The sides are slightly shorter to allow for the magnets which will be used to support the front panel when closed. I will be adding new fasteners rivets or screw studs.

I didn't know you used faux suede, do you also use faux leather, sometimes?

Anne-Sophie I like to think of myself as a case maker. I will try to use the most suitable material for the project, the faux suede I use is generally called Alcantara, although the trade marked Alcantara is very expensive. For this project weight is going to be an issue so the faux product is ideal. I have never used faux leather it does not have any properties that I cannot get from leather.

I have made and restored cases in the past this is one I made for myself. As I dont have many new projects to share at the moment I thought I would share some favourites.

This is one of my favourite restorations. The US Army Air Force existed between 1941 and 1947. When it arrived with me it looked like this, I was asked to make it useable but to show any new pieces, rather than make them look old.

This was a big job, I dissasembled the case completley removing every single stitch. The thread had deterioated over the years. I lined the whole case in new fine leather which I left undyed I did applly a wax sealer.

When it left it looked like this

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
