Making A Pen Case

Recommended Posts

I see where you are coming from T my only concern would be that without the kydex the thinner leather would not be strong enough to prevent crushing.

I am looking at the forms again as I made what I thought were two opposites with five dowels on each one. I now know that one of them needs to have six dowels to form the last of the five dowels.

Oh I hope that makes sense I am not sure that a picture will help but here goes.

So the upper part needs an extra dowel in order to form the end of the leather.

More tea required I think.

Thanks for looking

An fpn member has asked me to make them a case for a single pen in the blue of the last Omas case but with red stitching I have been to get red thread today at the same time I bought a new clicker knife with spare blades two scratch awls an embossing tool i did manage to resist the urge to spend the dogs biscuit money on a lovely hide i have had my eye on for some time :D

Anyway following a walk on the beach with previously mentioned dogs I set to work with the hot air gun and formed 9 pieces of Kydex into blanks dont worry about the wrinkley bits on the ends they all get all cut off.

The next stage is to cut some leather ( chance to try my new knife) and start moulding I am going to use the small brass stud to fasten the lid on this case.

Thanks for looking

The next step is to make a hole in the kydex to accommodate the brass stud

This is the stud inplace

I have used bond loc to fix the threads as the stud is under the leather I dont want to risk it comming loose

More to follow soon

The case is now dry and I have trimmed the edges I have also marked out the lid for cutting and stitching.
Those of you who are alert may have noticed I have made two cases here this is just in case I make a mistake then it means I dont have to start all over again.

Thanks for looking

The progress continues although to be honest I have been a little distracted by the arrival of my new bag this afternoon (like christmas all over again)

Ok back on track I have trimmed the tops to fit and made the holes for the stud I really like these studs i think they give my cases distinctive look.

There are manty different ways to finish the edges of leather here is my first stage I have applied water and friction from a rough cloth I will dye the leather and depending on the result i will add beeswax of edge kote.

Wow, you're work is beautiful! Thanks for sharing the process.

Thanks I really do appreciate your comments

The next step is to make the holes for stitching then I will sew one up which is having the threads coloured and then dye both together then sew the blue one with its red thread.

Thanks for looking

Here is todays installment

I was going to go into great detail on how to sew leather however I am not too good at it and there are many videos on youtube that are excellent

So here we go

Three stitches in
IMG_6263 by my0771, on Flickr
The needle is pushed through the hole created by the awl

The needles are crossed over each other then the upper one is pushed back throught to the front this creates a knot inside the leather which should any thread snap prevent the whole thing from falling apart.

This is the finished case ready for dye

It has been sealed with mink oil paste which should give it years of protection.

Hi Michael,

As promised, pictures of some of my work. I've never done a pen case before, but I knocked up a prototype quickly just for you (well, and because I urgently needed a pen case!). It's a bit rough because I'm just trying to figure out the design aspects at the moment, but you get the idea :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
