Michael, I remember that case, such beauty!

I dont have anything new to share this week so here is another memory test for you. I made this case in 2016 from three small pieces of English bridle leather left over from another project. I bought the yellow nappa leather for this project.

I had planned on selling this case and did advertise it for a short period, However it was made to fit my Delta pens and as they looked so comfortable I decided to keep it. I have to admit I put the case complete with pens somewhere safe and forgot where it was.

This case, I have never seen, because I would have remembered it. it's a beauty!

How big is the case? What size is the Rhodia Notepad?

Didn't you use yellow leather to make a Pokemon character bag for your daughter ?

Hi Anne-Sophie

The case is around 8in x 6in or 200mm x 150mm and around 1.5 in or 40mm thick.  You mean this one.

This yellow is different to the lamb nappa I used for the notebook case the bag leather is 1.8mm to 2mm thick and quite firm, where the nappa is around 0.5mm it is very soft but strong.

I did cut out a briefcase from the thicker yellow leather but never put it together, IIt would need an owner with a personality to match :) or someone with sunglasses 😎 🤣

No pen cases at the moment, I thought I would share some other projects.

I made this as a proof of concept for someone, The base is the shape of a gaming controller the chrome rods support the pad for the headset.

  • 3 weeks later...

Always in awe about the variety of objects you can make!

I understand that the first item is a game console and headphone holder, that is a mighty useful concept because as soon as a pair of headphone is out of its box, it is hard to find a suitable place to put them, when not using them.

Are you making the entire bed, or the platform with the drawers?

I still think that you could show picture of the unfinished yellow briefcase, in case anyone is interested in its form and color, to brighten their Spring, Summer and Autumn even Winter wardrobe.

A designer, who wear thick bright red glasses has revived the 1970's bright color layered cheap jewelry look, she sells all that stuff on a tv shopping channel.

Many people, in the U.S, have online artisan jewelry stores, I'd rather buy from them or make something like that myself.

Yellow and Gray were the 2021 Pantone colors of the year, this year it is periwinkle.

This is a version of the black cherry colour scheme I used earlier, It is actually darker as I used oxblood rather than red dye. I have decided to call it dark cherry.

Thanks I appreciate your comments.

All of the pieces of the case are now glued together, In fact stitching has begun as with everything else this is done by hand using high quality thread from Lin Cable in France, Just for reference it is around the same price as gold :)

It certainly seems like it anyway :)

I have received a commission so have started this along side the finishing of the Emperor case which does not have an owner as yet.

The starting point is the kydex which has been formed into the shape to hold the pens. I have added an internal strap to the inside to allow smaller pens to be hooked onto the strap to hold them in place.

The front panel is one piece and is wet molded from 2.2mm veg tanned shoulder, this will hold the new shape once dry.

I am happy with the shape and can now look to apply the dye.

Thanks Amber at least I am in good company :)

Although my cases are a little unusual in the use of Kydex to make them super strong without making them heavy. The idea came from another leather worker some years ago from this forum.

In this picture you can see the Kydex pen tubes wrapped in suede, The back panel here has had the Kydex piece glued in place and is waiting to have the suede fitted.

Test fitting the outer front cover, there is some dye missing on the front edge which I have fixed already. Everything else looks OK.

Here is an update on the twin Emperor pen case. Trimmed sanded and dyed the edges need polishing.

The closest I've found is the https://www.shibuiph.com/ pen cases (and I really love their legal folio), but I like my holder better, and I can't find the legal folio for sale.

Hi Amber

That case has worn well for its age considering it is quite fine leather, I would be interested to know what stops the strap from extending as it is used, I am sure the detail stitching will give it some purchase. Although I specialise in protective cases for pens I have made a number of soft cases, It might make a good future project. thanks for sharing.

I also like the legal folder you linked but their prices are very low.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
