Making A Pen Case

my63

Recommended Posts

My stars, your cases have all turned out so beautiful! I am in awe and really lusting after them.

Thank yo Kiavonne

You are not the only person to express an interest in the cases I have already taken orders for two of the next batch.

I am making some improvements to my forms the largest will be 1 cm longer and have a longer flap to accomodate longer pens, I am also rounding the edges a little more.

If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Regards

Michael

These are stunning Michael. Now is it possible to achieve a case for a triangular Omas 360? I am looking for one, but thus far have found nothing that will fit it. Vera

Do you want a triangular case (that would be a challenge) or a round case.

Alc3261 has a sample case that she is testing for me and as she also has the same pen then the adaptions i am making to the form should be fine.

If you send me the sizes of the pen I will make a blank to the size and then it will fit.

I have been playing with my oxblood dye this evening it is phone case mk 3

I would be happy to take up the challenge I will need the size of the pen so I can make a wooden form for the kydex and the leather.

Are you thinking of all leather or suede for the interior if so what colour suede.

Thinking out loud the flap would need to be an interesting shape but i am sure it can be done.

I am so going to follow the progress on this case. I'm pretty sure you'll come up with the right solutions for the challenge.

I had an early start this morning so I made a cardboard mock up of the Omas 360 I found an extensive review of the pen with dimensions.

Vera sent me the dimensions of her pen and my model is spot on.

So this is my starting point for this project rather than having the pen I can check for fit using the model.

The angle of this picture is a little off it is 25 mm to the top of the clip and the other angles are 20 mm.

My next step will be to make a cardboard sleeve that this model will fit into easily which I will make the wooden form from.

I am also making a tray for a writing slope as well as the other pen case forms that i am in the process of altering.

Thanks for looking

Michael

Michael,

You mentioned that the flap for the triangular pen case would be a challenge. It occurred to me that, instead of a flap, you might make a separate slip-on cap which could be attached to the body of the case by a leather strip. The strip would have just enough slack to allow the cap to be pulled off.

I have some pictures of a similar idea, but for some reason FPN is not allowing me to upload the files. The cap in the pictures does not slip on, but is secured when closed by a snap closure, so it has a leather "hinge" and a second strip with the snap on it. You could do this or the slip-on type. I'd prefer the slip-on myself, and it could even incorporate a snap closure as well.

I can send you the pictures via email if you want to see them since I can't put them here.

It works with card the question is can I make it in kydex and leather.

Time for a cup of tea and a think

Tea may not solve all of the problems in our world but the box the tea bags came in gave me the inspiration for this

I am pretty sure that I can replicate the case above in kydex and leather I might be able to hide some rare earth magnets to hold the lid closed.

I am not ruling out the slip on lid securing it might be difficult.

I have looked at the pen and the sides are not straight but have a slight radius so I am planning on replicating that in the case.

The case will be almost 30 mm high and as I dont have a piece of plywood that thick I have started to laminate four pieces of plywood together to make the form, Getting the shape right might be a challenge in its own right.

Thanks for looking

The blank is complete and I have cut out the basic shape. The blank is quite rough but it is the inside edges that matter.

As you can see I have marked out the shape that I wish to achieve as there is a lot of material to remove I will use a mini belt sander to help out.

I have removed the bulk of the waste material with the mini belt sander the rest will be done by hand

I have made the blank a little oversize as I will be lining the inside with suede.

Time to make a sample I think

Thanks for looking

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
