So, You Want Shading, Do You?

Masque

Recommended Posts

I suggest a name with a wintery context. The high shading and colors it put out just scream ice-cold to me. Something like "Ice Storm" or "Winters Night" would be very fitting if you ask me.

How about Blizzard Nuit? Sorry J. Herbin inspiration after their latest craze.

My only issue with this formula is I do not have ANY of the three inks! I mean, I do have a turquoise, a blue black, and a black, but definitely not those specific ones!

Masque, do you (or anyone else) have any more photos of this ink? Has anyone other than Masque brewed this at home? The one shot looked AMAZING and I'd love to see more! (And get a sample. And put it in an Ahab. And write with it off into the sunset.... or the Icelandic Minty Bathwater... :D )

If anyone has the Turquoise, I have the 54th Massachusetts, and would be willing to swap a few mLs for enough Turquoise to make a blend (and I'll just buy a sample of OMB...) I wonder, would it work with Heart of Darkness, or just plain old Black?

I think you can try the substitution, however Masque took quite awhile to verify this works and does not gunk things up... and his version is amazing... Mixing inks can sometimes lead t sludge, settling, etc. I am going to wait till I can order some ink, but it looks well worth the wait for me.

If you think everything is going well... you obviously have no idea what is really going on!

Here you go, sort of. Poor lighting, crummy paper, but its a similar mix using Heart of Darkness. It seems a bit lighter and not so much shading as the original mix. I tried it at home this morning on Rhodia and it seemed to shade much better on that.

Thanks for the photo! If you're getting that kind of variation on copy paper, this ink must REALLY shine on Rhodia / Clairefontaine / Tomoe River / .....

Sigh. So lovely.

Hi all,

Thank you for all of the feedback. I apologize for taking so long to get the Mexico to you, and I am genuinely surprised at the passionate interest that has been shown. As for a name, it has heretofore been known as, "batch one", "batch two", etc. I did suggest somewhat of a tongue in cheek name at the beginning of the post

I don't have Heart of Darkness, so I can't compare directly. I will say the OMBB has properties I don't see in my other blacks, but anything is worth trying.

I can also confirm that shading on "junk" papers isn't as clear. The photo above looks right.

I've entertained the idea of mixing this up at the bottle level rather than the mL level, but that'd leave me with rather a lot. :)

Masque, if you were to mix this up at the bottle level, I'm sure some of us would be more than happy to help you go through it. Maybe you could sell micro-bottles (10-15 mLs) to other people on the forum and/or reading this particular thread... assuming we could all see pretty pretty pictures of Black Swan in Icelandic Minty Bathwater in action ;)

I would also be up for helping you go through a bottles worth ;). I would be all for purchasing a samples vials worth of the ink to test out.

Just catching up on this thread. I have all the inks Masque used (is this for version #6?) so I may try it at some point. Just not this week -- too much else to do over the next few days. :(

Hey, here's a name (for anyone who is a fan of the old show _The Prisoner_ -- yeah, I mean the original from the 1960s with Patrick McGoohan ). We could call it "Number 6" (and the version with Heart of Darkness "The New Number 6"....).

Hey! No idea about Noodler's Black, but I finally got Old Manhattan and I'll be doing a review of this ink at some point, Masque permitting :) Give me about a week to get home from my vacation.....

Anyone try this with standard Noodler's Black? I don't have OMBB but I have Noodler's black.

Looks like no one has, so you're volunteered! Give a small amount a try and let us know how it works

Wow. I've been away for about 6 months and catching up on old posts. Thanks for the recipe. I will try this in the next few days.

Unless you use precise measurements, your mileage may vary. Additionally, no guarantees are made as to the accuracy of this formula. My inks may be younger or older than yours, may be from a different batch, or maybe I'm just really good looking and my inks are trying to impress me.

15x Navajo Turquoise

3x 54th Massachusetts

1x Old Manhattan Blackest Black

Noodler's inks, all three.

Wow thank you for sharing this!

Tsuki-Yo is beautiful. Shades differently. Yama-Guri is closer, but bluer and with that legendary sheen.

This is no hoax. What a silly hoax it would be. I've sent out samples to a couple of folks. And despite the discouraging negativity and bitterness shown towards me here I will be posting my latest recipe as soon as I find it amongst the moving boxes.

Apologies to those who have patiently waited.

What do you mean when you say Yama-Guri is closer? Closer to what?

I want to make sure it's stable, and that the shading doesn't vanish as the ink gets to know itself; ..

To me the most amazing thing about this recipe is that Masque has actually created an ink that is sentient.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
