Twsbi 580 Flex Issues

I recently attempted to add flex to a 580 F nib. I took off the shoulders of the nib, cut out the sides and thinned the underside of the nib. Everything works fairly well, the nib flexes like I want it to. The only problem I'm having is that after even some light flexing, the tines will end up too far apart. Any ideas on what might be causing this? I've seen flex added to twsbi nibs in similar ways before, such as Pendleton Brown's "Bad Boy with Angel Wings" mod.

This, you can do this to any nib, but if it lacks this property it will cause the tines to be sprung or splayed out like this, normally if I am going to look at doing this I would see if the nib will actually hold up to being flexed or not by testing its limits.

Wrong type of steel, I'm afraid. It's not meant for flexing.

first of all, nice work and congrats for experimenting.

 

Since, like you said, others have modded that nib, without the issues you mentioned (i.e. plastic deformation), it would seem that you took off too much metal from the sides and/or the underside.

 

Have a look at this thread (if you haven't run into it already) for a similar, allegedly successful, mod.
