Introduction- Finally Coming Out Of The Shadows

Finally coming out of the shadows after several months of [quite satisfying and informative] lurking.

I rekindled my love of fountain pens around a year ago, ironically after digging out my collection with the intention of selling some of it off, since I hadn't paid it much attention for a while. Well, while looking through some listings on ebay to determine what I might be able to get for some my pens, I ended up placing a bid instead. Oops.

While I've always loved pens, and frequently had ink-stained fingers even in elementary school from cheap fountain pens, the Matte Black Namiki VP I bought in 1995 or 1996 and used throughout college really sealed the deal. Sadly, it disappeared along the rest of the contents of a shoulder bag left in a bar some time ago.

So anyway, now I'm back into actively (and essentially exclusively) writing with fountain pens, and, rather than pairing it down, have added a bit to my arsenal since rediscovering it.

The bulk of my tiny collection is still older-style VPs, but I also have a couple of TWSBIs that I am very impressed by, as well as a smattering of LAMY Safaris/Vistas and Kaweco Sports, which I think, for the price, are really superb (though there is the occasional bad apple), and a few other odds and ends.

Generally speaking, I like tinkering with things, so I was incapable of resisting Richard Binder's nib-smoothing kit (with cheap practice pens) and I'm sure I have many costly (but hopefully educational) mistakes in my future.

Anyway, after visiting this site with great frequency over the past 6+ months, for ink/pen reviews, general discussions, repair/maintenance advice etc., I decided it was high time I at least announce myself and feel like less of a stalker. So, hello! And thank to all for creating and contributing to such a rich site.

Welcome, Chris !

Agreed. That is not the way to sell fountain pens, or to pare down a collection. The correct process is . . . . . . is . . . . . .is .. . . I have no idea.

Write with joy.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
