My Second F.p. Mb 149 Or The 1912 Heritage? Discuss................

Recommended Posts

Hi all :)

So I currently write with a superbly adjusted Raden Vanishing Point with a fine nib from Richard Binder.

I am always looking at other pens and often drool over many of them. I would like your thoughts on this.....

For my second purchase and indeed second fountain pen, do I go for the MB149 which I so like, or the new 1912 Heritage edition?

The 149 appeals to me because of its size and indeed 'reputation' and even its Heritage is already established.

The new 1912 appeals to me because of the twist mechanism and it does not half look good! lol. However, its means unscrewing the cap AND twisting to get the nib out which may become really 'painful' over time.

Secondly, I am thinking of getting a Medium nib too in either of those, this is something I am still 'discussing' with myself at the moment.

Your comments please....

Thanks,

Rich.

I would get the 149. I prefer the tri toned nib of the 149 compared to the 1912.

Big decision. Can I ask if you have handled either ?

Hi Pen Nut, no i have not handled either but do have a local pen shop that is an authorised dealer so will pay them a visit for a look and hopefully try of one. As you suggest, that will make my mind up for me I think!

Well done with your choices! I have 5 FPs, 2 of which are VPs. If I could do it over, I would have gotten the raden. I've also got a 149 and love it. Those would be my 2 FPs and I could be content with just that. No experience with the other MB though, sorry.

Just get both. You will in the end anyways so just get them now.

Good advice.

I would go for the 1912. Its different, the mecanics of the pen are awesome and also the nib. It will not be available forever. If you a lady have one 149, it will be more of the same.

Write, write, write. Use your pens not your fingers !!!

I own both and love them equally.

The heritage pen involves more fiddling, ie retracting the nib etc. If that sort of thing bothers you, stay with the 149.

I also have them both.

The 149 is a straight forward pen. Firm grip, lightweight compared to the Heritage. Bigger ink capacity. Easier to service.

The Heritage is a nice FP with an incredibles soft nib and a lot of feedback. Inkcapacity is not that big. That is what I also like, because I change colours every week.

My preferred supplier (no affiliation just a very happy customer):

Perhaps you should try out both 149 and 1912 heritage nibs before you decide.. Whichever pen you choose, you will never regret it..

Hi,

The 1912 is a nice pen. That said, I really don't see the "point" of a pen with a retractable nib and a screw on cap.

I thought a retractable nib would obviate the need for a cap; eg: Pilot Vanishing point.

You are already doomed. You will eventually buy both. The real question is, "which one first?" I am sure you will enjoy either one. They are both wonderful pens.

I have the 1912 and a 146...........If I had to pick right now, I would go for the Heritage. You have to try one to really appreciate it. Mine is a fine, and there is something about the feel of the nib, the weight etc. that appeals to me. My old Pelikans beat it for line variation, but the 1912 is really special in it's own way.

Best of both worlds...get both. They are really 2 completely different animals.

If you want to buy a new one I would choose the Heritage. It shows that MB isn't just resting on its laurels (like they normally do), it's innovating. You can buy a second hand or NOS 149 pretty easily without having to pay $900...or whatever they cost now.

I have owned a 149 for a few years and while I love it, I cannot put down the 1912 that I recieved today. The build quality is outstanding and the writing is superb. I say go for the 1912 as I did, it is a unique pen that has something different to offer.

For me it would be the heritage On the grounds of something abit different I've got both the 146 and 149 and both are great pens in there own rite and for me the 149 is my favourite writing pen but I love the mechanical aspects of the 1912.
