Loose Cap On Mb142?

I have a burgundy MB142 MB 144 that's in great shape, but the cap-to-body fit is not snug at all. There's no distinct 'click' feeling when you push the cap onto the body; you can feel a little resistance when the cap seats, but nothing positive. I can't see any cracks in the cap, or any damage anywhere on the pen.

 

I'm also not sure where to look, since I don't know what part of the cap and what part of the pen are supposed to be engaging and providing the 'click', if that makes sense.

 

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure it is a 142? The 142 was a threaded cap and piston filled pen made in the 50s.

 

If you have a push on cap cartridge converter pen then it is most likely a 144.

 

Montblanc can likely fix that for their basic service charge which is about $80.00 in the US IIRC.

Thanks - I appreciate the welcome. You're right; I do have a 144. It's from the early-to-mid 80s.

What's the best entry point for Mont Blanc service if you don't have a MB boutique nearby? Is there an 800 number?

That's possible - the pen was a gift from my dad, and he has the rollerball and the ballpoint as well (he received all three as a gift many years ago, and hadn't used the FP in forever, so he gave it to me). I'll check with him when I go home for Christmas.

Just a followup/resolution. When I went home to visit, I found a spare cap in a drawer that provided a much more positive "click" when seating. Externally, it looked the same as the cap I had, but the plastic insert inside the cap was different. The "good" cap was slightly rougher cosmetically, so I swapped inserts between the caps. Dad didn't remember how he came to have an extra cap, but I'm suspecting he acquired an extra rollerball cap that ended up on the fountain pen somewhere along the line.
