Masters Of The Fountain Pen

My copy of The Waiting Years arrived today. Can't wait to start it this evening. Thank you again for the recommendation!

Have you read any Enchi Fumiko? I think The Waiting Years is a masterpiece.

Also, if you like Natsume Soseki, there is a new translation of Light and Dark coming out next month, by John Nathan. It had a very favourable review in this week's Times Literary Supplement - the reviewer compared it to Glenn Gould's recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations (Gould, a Canadian classical pianist, was a Soseki fan).

Virtu, Thank you so much for posting all of these beautiful videos. I am a big fan of Japanese fountain pens -- Nakaya, Pilot/Namiki, Sailor and Hakase (especially Hakase) -- and I have learned really appreciated seeing the amount of dedication and care that goes into producing one of these masterpieces which I use every day of my life.

I am planning to come to Tokyo at the beginning of March and cannot wait to go on a "fountain pen tour."

Keep posting...this is my favorite thread on all of FPN!

Hi there,

The other day, I got my new diary cover "IL BISONTE" (Size:A5 / Color: Dark Brown)! This Italian book cover is really well made. I'm feeling this to the full amount. Is there anybody who knows or uses IL BISONTE as a book cover or a diary cover on this thread? If any, please tell me your favorite product because I'm thinking about getting something new of this brand. :)

PEN-LAND CAFE...

Fountain pen shop or coffee house?

Mr. Takagi and Mr. Ogi manage the interesting shop at Nagoya, Japan! At the shop, you can enjoy writing with many kinds of fountain pens having a nice cup of coffee. If you find a nice fountain pen, you can purchase it on the spot. ( Of course, Mr. Ogi is able to repair fountain pens and adjust the nibs ) :)

Thanks for sharing these interesting videos and providing us with this window to the amazing Japanese culture - I'm also a fan of Murakami, Kurosawa and Miyazaki, so this thread is one of my favourites here at FPN.

It looks so stylish. :cloud9:

I didn't know much about IL BISONTE but I have the Midori traveler's notebook, too.

And, thank you so much for sharing the video of PEN-LAND CAFE.

How many coffeehouses like that are there in Japan?

Thanks. There're three fountain pen shops that serve coffee in Japan. :)

Thank you as usual for sharing the nice videos. The leather of Ashford organizers look really neat.

By the way, what's your favorite blue ink? I want to know your daily-use blue ink for Japanese writing.

Thanks in advance.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
