Thanks for the link to the Murakami documentary, Kota.

 

I'm familiar with Alan Yentob's work in the Imagine series...but somehow, this one has passed me by. I'll watch it later, when my chores are done, and I can relax.

Malcolm, would you recommend the film Norwegian Wood? I've not yet seen it. I agree, we need a Japanese cinema and literature thread. Kota, can't wait to watch that documentary. Thanks again!

I bought my dad the English edition of the Hobonichi Techo, which just came out in English this year.

 

Sadly, he didn't seem to like it. My wife didn't know I had gotten it, and her comment later was, "well yeah, because it's for people who WRITE TINY". But anyway, maybe this would have been a better choice.... if for no other reason than the size.

Hobonichi-Techo is the bestselling diary ever in Japan. We Japanese call the English edition Hobonichi-Planner. It's tiny, however, the paper is very friendly for fountain pens because Tomoe-River is used for it. Now, four types of Hobonichi-Techo are available. Original, Weeks, Cousin (A5) and the English edition (same size as Original). I like Cousin the best of all because of the bigger size. :)

Yes, I would, betweenthelens. But watch it as a film in its own right, and not as a film of the book. I mean, there's no way possible to capture Norwegian Wood (or any of Murakami's novels, for that matter) in a 133 minute movie.

No, Malcolm. There is no way unless Murakami himself directed the film. Now, that would be something. Still, I will watch it. It's in my Netflix queue and I look forward to seeing it. Thanks!

I just can't imagine anything doing justice to Murakami's works. He's absolutely brilliant. My very favorite book of his is Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.

Yeah, his literary expression is sooooo sensitive and brilliant!

...Nobody in the world can do justice to Murakami's works but himself. :)

That is a VERY nice collection of Sailors, and their nibs. Some nice inks, too. I notice that you have trended more towards the broader spectrum of nibs.

 

I have only two Sailors, both have nibs marked NM, and I like them very much. :thumbup:

Hard-Boiled Wonderland...that was my very first Murakami! Needless to say, I was hooked.

Absolutely...this is why I think that the Norwegian Wood film, needs to be watched as something outside of the world created by Murakami.

I've ever tried to use many kinds of fountain pens since 2001, for example, Montblanc, Pelikan, Lamy, Parker, Sheaffer, Aurora, Stipula, Delta, Visconti, Pilot, Platinum and so on... however, what I feel smooth and comfortable the best is "Sailor"! To say the least of it, Sailor is one of the most reliable fountain pen makers in the world, I believe. :)

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
