Wality 52 Overlay Design

While going through one of my pen storage folders, I came across this pen. I was overcome by a wave of memories and was carried back nearly a decade... My first meeting with the Late Mr. Raju Mirchandani (we used to call him Rajubhai), how he had warmly welcomed me, an ordinary pen enthusiast, to his factory and offices just because I had expressed a desire to see how the pens are made. He was a true gentleman, respected by all he came in contact with and a treasure trove of knowledge about pens and the industry, he was the driving and thinking force behind Airmail/Wality in those days. The Wality 52OD was one of their premier piston filled export pens in those days and I got the chance to buy one. Here is the pen.

The 52OD(Overlay design) is a piston pen that was injection molded, with a satin gold plated finish over the trims and a gold plated cast overlay over the cap tube. It looks lovely and very Indian.

Thank you Baaz. Unfortunately, this pen was never sold by them in the local market due to the cost reasons. As I said I bought only one, which is this one, years back...

Hari...that is a wonderful looking pen...I think they used to display this and some other really good looking pens on their website some years back, because I remember writing to them enquiring about this and other pens...anyway, this pen will find a good number of buyers if they decide to release it in the Indian market...it is slightly blingy for my tastes...but so what, I wouldnt mind having it my collection...I think you might be the only one in India currently owning the pen...enjoy the exclusivity...

This looks like a very nice pen. All the Wality injection molded pens I have handled seem to be a bit sturdier and better made than other companies' offerings. I realize that most people will fixate on the cap overlay, but the exposed ink window and the metal ring near the twist knob are features that are very attractive to me. Thank you for showing us this pen from your collection.

Jai, yes, that other pen is the 52D with the etched design cap. I don't have that pen, I was offered it, but I declined at that time. I was not fully mad yet in those days... :)

Thanks! Most of Wality pens are molded by hand using manual compression molding presses. The higher priced export variants used better material (non smelly, hard, the smelly, soft ones are LDPE actually...) and were injection molded, I have also seen that machine there...

The normal 52 also has the partially exposed when capped ink view window and the metal trim at the knob.

Best

I am more familiar with the 58's and the 71's. Is there a good source for the 52? I will recheck the link that Shrujaya posted. Thank you.

Ok, the 58 and 71J are compression molded, hard hand work. The 71JT has a manual lathe turned transparent acrylic barrel with a compression molded cap.

The 52 used to be carried by their official overseas agent retrodesk:

I am not sure of the current status.

The 52 is slightly difficult to find even locally. Piston systems are considered fragile for student use here and hence don't sell that well as compared to their ED pens.

Congrats both of you! I was under the impression that the Retrodesk website was just there, but they had little to no stock...

Well, he does say he does not have a full stock, but he did take my money, so here's hoping he'll honor that... if not, hopefully I'll get my money back! Time will tell...

Mhguda, have you received your pens or had any contact with the vendor? I have e-mailed twice asking for a tracking number or a shipping date and have not received any response. Thanks.

Not yet, but it's early days yet. At this moment I'm not yet worried. But, following your post, I have sent them an email and hope to hear soon. Fingers are crossed!

Bad news. My money was refunded, so I'm guessing no pens from Retrodesk. He did not say why he refunded my money, but what else can it be? Scribbles, did you hear from him? Or, conversely, get your pens? I am so disappointed.

No word and no pen. I opened a dispute on PayPal and received a refund. Sorry to hijack your thread Hari.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
