I am new to fountain pens and new to this forum.

I bought my first fountain pen (Lamy Safari EF Graphite and love it) because;

  1. I prefer the 'old' ways of doing things more than the new.
  2. The zombie apocalypse is coming and I want to be prepared with ludditic styles of writing.
  3. I will die someday and I want there to be a record of my existence (yes I am THAT self interested). (need ink with permanence/fade resistance)
  4. It annoys my wife when I am snobbish about things like wine, coffee, food, man-purses, back-packs, etc.. and now pens.

In anycase, researching ink is about to drive me crazy. I love my current ink 'Noodlers Burma Road Brown' but I found that it really has no permanence, which is a big deal to me.

Does anyone have any recommendations for similar colors (I really like the browns/golden browns/sepia types) that will last a long, long time. I really am kinda hung up on archival.

Ink doesn't have to be Noodlers. I like the look of that Herbin Cafe de iles but I can't seem to find if it archives/fade resistance.

I hoping to learn from people who are even more snobby than myself. ;)

Modern "bulletproof" and "eternal" inks certainly endure for a long time. Chemistry experts and promises

not-withstanding, there is really one way to be sure -- WAIT !

We know that Iron gall inks endure. We have handwritten documents from the 1700's.

Personally, when I am dead, read my stuff or not. I don't care. Please finish my cigars and sweet,

Germany wines.

Driving the wife crazy, however, is a worthwhile endeavor. Aw ! Is she reading over my shoulder, again ?

Curses ! I'm on the couch tonight.

See Wikipedia about Iron Gall inks.

Be sure to clean (=flush) your pens very regularly when using Iron Gall inks as the deposits tend to clog the feed of the pen.

Also be aware that stains on cellulose material cannot be removed.

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.

Reminds me of the day my associates and I developed a cure for all mankind's ills and mistakenly wrote it down with invisible ink.

Was that the end of the Laboratory? Somehow the exactitude created a fully destructive device, as always!
