hello everyone! I am encountering a problem with my pelikan brilliant red ink..i see some white debris floating around inside the ink which sediment at the bottom after about an hour of stagnation. i am not sure whether it is some pigment issue or is it really contaminated. i bought the ink about 4-5 months ago and have used it once.

I had this happen with a bottle that I bought years ago, possibly 2008. Considering I hated the color, I just dumped the bottle and never looked back. I wonder if the manufacture of this specific ink causes some weird reaction. I've never had a problem with any other Pelikan ink.

  • 4 months later...

Late to the party but thought I'd chime in anyway.

My bottle also has this. Mine's also oldish (around 4 years or thereabouts). Using the ink in pens, it works as long as you regularly use the pen (few times a day). But letting it sit longer than a day results in extreme residue (some sort of reddish gunk) that clogs the tines. Haven't had issues with the actual feed mechanism having problems. Lately I've simply been using it as dip pen ink (even though the pens can be cleaned out, I don't like the hassle of having to put in the extra few minutes to wash out a pen because of ink gunk).

I do have a bottle of stinky Hero black ink (also a bottle of blue) that I might start using as a general 'dump' of inks I can't/won't/shouldn't use anymore and start practicing calligraphy with huge broad nibs (say a parallel 6.0mm) in order to use the stuff up quickly.

Could it possibly be the ink pigment has started precipitating out of the solution because so much water evaporated? Haven't tried diluting the stuff yet, might give it a go one day. The precipitate doesn't dilute when I shake the bottle.

All bleeding stops...eventually

Looks like mold. I had a bottle of "sterile" solution that I made up in the lab, and about a week later, had one white ball floating in it. Kept it around, and it just multiplied.

I'd return it to the store. They will probably give you credit. Sorry to see it.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.

Reminds me of the day my associates and I developed a cure for all mankind's ills and mistakenly wrote it down with invisible ink.

Was that the end of the Laboratory? Somehow the exactitude created a fully destructive device, as always!
