Anybody Seen This Before? Stick With Me For A Few Sentences, Please...

Hi,

When Nakaya made my pens, they told me not to post the cap for six months since posting the cap before this time period could destroy the finish. I never post my caps, so I didn't really pay much attention, but I think after some time, the finish ages and becomes more beautiful.

I think that if the pen is brand new, people who are sensitive should wait some months for the finish to cure completely. The pen is also made from hard rubber, but I haven't had any problems although I'm latex allergic.

If it makes any difference, I ordered my pens from Japan, and they make sure to warn you, but since I have family in that part of the world, but not necessarily in Japan proper, we are fairly well versed about the effects of uncured urushi. Once fully cured, there should be no problem even for people who have bad allergic reactions in general. I have family with bad allergic reactions who have used my Nakaya pens that I have had for more than a year but haven't had any ill effects.

Hi. Just in case anyone accesses this thread again when struggling with their own painful rashes, I want to include the happy resolution. I stored my pen for three months in a humidor, changing the little water holder maybe once a week (I wasn't very attentive). Then I pulled out the pen and slowly, carefully started to use it, at first for very short sessions, and then with increasing frequency and duration. And no rash! Not even a little prickle. Hooray.

Man, I was SO afraid I was going to have to sell this pen. I am very pleased with this result.

Thanks again to everyone who pitched ideas and commiserated.

Best wishes,

Congratulations on things turning out so well! Haha, I'm not exactly looking forward to dealing with a cool-off period if ever it turns out I'm allergic to urushi, but it'll probably be worth it in the end.

I've heard a lot about not posting Nakayas, though. How's the balance while posted, if I may ask? And does the urushi seem any durable, like, next-generation durable?

Cheers!

Kevin

Thank you!

I've always been a staunch posting advocate (in my own usage); having a cap lying around while I write just seems to invite accidents, IMO. But when I bought the Nakaya I accepted the fact that I shouldn't post, and I don't. But I have tested posting. The balance is still great; the whole pen is very, very light. But the cap doesn't post well. The connection isn't solid and the cap shifts around, feeling as if it could fall off at any moment. That's on the Naka-ai model; I don't know if it's the same for all the other beautiful Nakayas.

I've actually learned to write unposted in a couple of instances lately because I've (unknowingly) bought pens whose caps just won't post or really disrupt balance if they do. I can now write unposted without grumbling and being annoyed....but generally I still shy away from buying pens that can't post.

The urushi seems incredibly durable. I haven't tried to SCRATCH it or anything, but I've been using my pen daily for about a month (I think) and I can't see any usage marks on it at all. And urushi really is just as beautiful as everyone says.

Here's hoping you won't be allergic! :) Most people are not. Even if you were, though, you might be able to avoid the problem by buying pens that aren't freshly made. I had to wait a couple of months to get mine through nibs.com, so I think it was fresh off the lacquer table when I got it.

best wishes,

eo

I have had this experience with all my Nakayas to a greater or lesser extent. The solution that worked for me was to put the Nakaya in a glass cup next to the shower and let in cure for about a week. The moisture from the shower seemed to do the trick. I suspect this will happen with my next Nakaya. Time and additional curing seems to solve the problem.

Haha, incidentally, I happen to be a chronic poster myself! I just don't feel right writing with the cap anywhere else other than on the pen's barrel. That being the case, I've caused myself no small amount of trouble with that particular bit of stubbornness. For example, I just recently found out that the Sheaffer Taranis, while perfectly usable while posted, is actually a lot more comfortable for me unposted. The difference is actually quite pronounced.

... Of course, I still use it posted, out of habit

That being the case, I think I ought to get one of the Long or Portable Nakayas to break myself of the habit. It's not that I think it much of a bother, being used to posting caps and all, but it seems like a huge shame to waste the perfectly good finish on pens like the Nakayas simply out of stubbornness, don't you agree?

Cheers!

I would have sworn I had seen this post before. My solution is to stick the pen in a glass cup and leave it in your bathroom for a few weeks. The steam from the shower should solve the issue. I have had this problem before and I am still walking and talking. This isn't really a big deal unless your sensitivity is extreme which I doubt. Also, unless you write with gloves, which you could, you should really be getting a rash there.

If all else fails, send your pens to me.

:) You did see it before. Scroll up the page a little.

Apparently my sensitivity was extreme, but as I posted above, all is well now. After my reaction, I gave the pen a three-month vacation in a humidor for the urushi to cure, and I've been using to pen for about two months now with no problems.

I didn't really understand what you meant in your "gloves" sentence. I think you might have left out a word or two?

best wishes,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
