Diamine Blue Black

Diamine Blue-Black is an absolutely stunning color, but I don't use it much because I heard somebody say it's an iron-gaul ink and I thought I remembered reading that those were very corrosive inside fountain pens (especially piston-fillers). Can anybody substantiate this?

Diamine Blue Black has no iron-gall. It's perfectly safe and performs well.

Diamine Registrar's Ink has iron-gall (a hue similar to Pelikan BB), as does Lamy/Montblanc Blue Black. Not Diamine Blue Black.

(edit: I really can't spell!)

Ahhhhh... Thanks for easing my fears!

You have no idea how "hog wild" I'm now going to go on this ink!

Bottled Lamy/Montblanc Blue-Black does have iron gall. Not a lot, just a little. Read this thread.

Lamy cartridges, however, have NO gall.

My Diamine Blue-Black seems to form a gummy residue on and around the base of the nib and blocks the slit enough to impede flow. I always have to clear it out a bit after leaving it overnight. I have only tried it in my steel studio so far. I don't have this problem with any other ink. Do you think it may be a dodgy bottle or is this ink known for this?

Has: Lamy Safari M, Lamy Studio Steel F, Lamy 2000 F, Ice Blue Pilot Capless M, Lamy AL-star, TWSBI 540

Wants: Pelikan M1000 or perhaps M800, Parker Duofold Centennial, Gold M for Studio, Lamy 2000 M, Visconti Homo Sapiens, some Kawecos and Rotrings

After about a half-day stretch of writing, I find it gets a little gummy and impedes flow

in my Pelikan M805 and the nib needs a splash under a tap of fresh water to clear it out.

Other inks haven't had this gummy issue for me but then again, none of those inks make

me smile like Diamine's blue-black.

I think it depends on the particular bottle that you get: I have a small bottle of "teal" that a friend gave me that works great, then I bought a larger bottle of teal and it clogs up my pens. Go figure.

I'm a big fan of Diamine, thanks for the comparison, I do like the colour of the Umber.

And how can this be, because he is the Kwisatz Haderach.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
