Just how do you distinguish a 21 from a Super 21, is the Super 21 labeled as such?

Recently acquired a gray 21, looks great, sac looks uninked .. but could it be a Super?

The 21 has a standard style steel nib under an enlarged hood to look like the 51

The 21 Super has a tubular nib in steel (octanium) of the same design as the 51 (the hood is smaller). actually the same nib as the 51 special

I am not sure if the "super" designation is imprinted on the pen.

The 21's clip is a flat clip, where the Super 21 has an arrow clip. Regular 21 has no arrow clip. Normally, unless the cap was switched for a Super 21 cap. The nibs are different as above. The Super 21 has 21 on the cap sides. Both are nice writers.

Additionally, check the size of the intake:

Big on the 21--

Small on the Super (and yes, I should have a size-matched picture)--

...however, this picture also shows the earlier of the two Super clips, with the arrow suggested rather than outlined. Later examples have clips like 45s.

If Esties have a downside, IMO that's it, that they were so inexpensive (both to make and sell) that the impetus was on making them Fast and consistently the same rather than being easy to repair. Repairs on Esties that would be easy on other pens aren't so with Esties as they weren't really intended to be repaired but Replaced. For this same reason there's also no large supply of parts available as there are for other pens.

I am not getting any smell out of this durned monitor. Wish I wuz psychic so I could tell if any of those durned Sonnets were genuiiiine.

----------------------------------------------

I have done bought myself a bunch of Estie parts pens. Waiting for the need . . .watched that there auction ending in $2.77 and another. Had no urge to bid, sorry.

I have had Parker 21 Supers for nigh on 25 years and no failures yet. Might as well sell the backups.

The 21s and Super 21s are durned good pens.

Yea, I read a write-up on replacing the clip, assuming one had a replacement part, and it was quite an involved process. But, I listed it low expecting it to bid up to a decent price ... boom, $2.77. If I had known this I would've just kept it, mechanism worked, it wrote well and I don't carry my pens in my pocket anyway. I will watch on eBay for a chance to pick up one (a complete one) for a decent price, it is an attractive pen. But enough of my whining in the Parker group!

My pen does have the arrow clip, the "intake" is small, so probably a super. I'll post a couple of pictures tonight for verification.

Thanks,

Jeff

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
