Hello all. I'm new to FPN and also to fountain pen stuff (well I did have a period about 12 years ago where I played with a Parker Vector and some Pilot disposables while a teenager). A few weeks ago I found two of my wife's great grandfathers pens (a 1938 Parker Vacumatic and late '20s/early '30s Duofold). I was quickly enamored with them and the wider world of pens and filling systems and tinkering. Well, here I am, 24 pens later (have been through most every antique/junk store in Oklahoma City and my first ebay experience.

I've been trying to aquire a broad variety of pens cheaply (every one has been under $18) and gaining bits of knowlege about these vintage pens and how to restore them. I'm more interested in figuring these pens out and making them sing, rather than collecting, per se.

It's been a blast so far and I am already indebted to FPN and the broader online FP community for much of the knowledge I've been able to cram into the past month or so. So, I figured I'd dive right in to learn more and maybe share some myself.

Questions are welcome!

Welcome !

Two heirloom Parkers from your wife's side of the family ? Wonderful ! I hope you can maintain them in

good condition and use them. It is a great way to honor the memory of the earlier generation. I find this

location good reading.

I hope you will enjoy writing with your fountain pens, as well as tinkering.

If you feel any kind of indebtedness, the next time you visit FPN, bring donuts. :lticaptd:

Thanks for the warm wellcome, all. Sasha, thanks for the website. And, yes, I do delight in writing with them (I've got my Duofold sacked and filling and am about to take my Vac to Chris Thompson in Tulsa for a new diaphragm). In fact, my it was my astonishment with how well the old Parkers still wrote that inspired me to find other pens for daily use (ones that I would be comfortable taking to work, etc).

P.S.

I ended up eating a couple on donuts on the way here, but help youself to the rest:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
