We'd normally say 'innocent until proved guilty'

However, with Montblanc pens and their fake counterparts, it tends to be the other way round - especially with these cartridge models, which are the most faked of the series.

I can't see anything amiss in your photographs, though.

It looks good - but we'd really need more information/photographs to say for definite.

And - Welcome to FPN.

It looks pretty good. I have one, but am no expert.

Examine the cap band. The name "Meisterstuck" should be in block letters.

The "U-umlaut" character should be the same height as the others. Actually, the letter "U"

will be shorter than the other letters, with the two small "dots" above the "U" points making

up the rest of the height. Look carefully. There is a distinct separation between each arm

of the letter "U" and the dots of the umlaut.

The Montblanc is first tier in quality. It is expensive. Every mark, feature, and cut should

be clean and precise. I see some damage in the second photograph.

I take it that you do not have the pen. If the listing specifies that it is a Montblanc, Ebay

buyer protection will support you in a genuine sale. By the way, obtain from the Montblanc

Forum member the correct spelling of the name. "MONT BLANC" is one of the "knock-off"

names.

Yes, it should glow red.

But this is not a definitive test of authenticity.

Many black pens seem to glow red under strong light.

Ask the seller for the serial number, then google that number.

There are some well known numbers which fakers seem to use again and again.

(It may not have a serial number, if it is pre 1990)

All in all, it's very difficult to be 100% certain from photographs alone.

I realise that this is a catch 22 situation, but hands-on experience is the usual clincher.

Communication with the seller is the first step.

Pictures of the feed (underside of the nib) and internals will help to authenicate, or otherwise

If you go for it and it proves to be counterfeit, the Ebay system will help you to get a refund.

Good luck.

The only thing weird about it is that it is a regular 144 with an 18k gold nib. I think that they made 144's with 18k nibs for the French market, but I'm not sure.

Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.

It has the correct bands for the 144, and the one nearest the nib is corroded as is common.

The cap is push fit not screw fit which is also correct.

The nib should be monotone gold and it is.

It looks authentic from the pictures that you have shown us.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
