A couple of days without FPN is just not acceptable. Do you guys know what I have been through? Have you ever tried to get counselling at 1am in the morning? My wife just didn't care!!!!!! Thank God you're back.

On a more genuine note, well done to the folk who run the site. I love FPN and really miss it when it's down. Keep up the good work guys and thanks again.

Many, many thanks to Wim and all the moderators of our little Fountain Pen Nut House on the Prairie for all the hours and effort that went into resurrecting and upgrading FPN. I am so glad it's back! Lost skins? Not a huge deal, I am grateful it's back up and I really missed our virtual pen community! Thank you!

Well done, all. And thank you.

The missing skins? Dunno, I like this clean new look. Bright and efficient.

Fingers crossed for a clean, safe, future.

Thanks.

Still frustratingly slow for me, and I have a very fast connection. Thanks for the efforts of everyone involved, hope the speed improves.

I'm sorry but I need to ask what exactly is meant by "we were trying to defeat the redirects?" I'm a computer engineer working in the field and I've never heard any technical problem described in this way.

Thanks.

I am not a computer anything, but apparently no matter what link was used to access FPN, one was re-directed to a titillating site totally unrelated to FPN.

So the source had to be de-activated somehow, I guess.

I think that is also why we were asked to clean our DNS cache, etc., though I know nothing about how websites or their links work. Correct me anyone.

And thanks to everyone who gave considerable effort and resources to get our fix restored!

Yes. What happened was that there appeared a second set of name servers for FPN on April 23, quite unasked for, and something that should have been impossible, which redirected to a malevolent site, which probably carried some malware deliberately, and which would spew out more redirects, to not so great sites.

So, if your internet browsing would take you, on your way here, past that server as one of the "internet stations" to FPN, you would get a redirect to a rather different place. Taking it out fortunately was not difficult, once we knew what and were it was (thanks to our great server and hosting support team at PowerVPS actually). The registrar helped us to fix this - well, they had to :D.

However, since a browser stores everything in cache and temp files, you would still have those bad links on your computer until you clean out cache and temp files, so it could in principle happen again until that has been done.

HTH, warn regards, Wim

Still slightly slow, but definitely performing better. Hopefully I won't make any more double posts. (Thank-you to the moderator who removed my second post.)

The slowness definitely made the interface confusing.

It's hard and frustrating work correcting an issue like this and I'm sure made even worse knowing there's thousands of people knawing the nibs off their pens waiting to get back on. Thank you for your efforts to keep this board up, I'm sure it's making you millionaires! ;)

It's early sundaymorning here, 06.40 local. The site is faster than last night, but pics loading leaves you time for a coffee break.

The new software and skin are still unusual, my poor avatar has an awful headache now. Posting seems different now. I see many double, even quadruple posts.

It's good we're back online, but it is not the way it worked before (apart from the DNS. Could this slownes still be DNS related?

Ah, DNS cache poisoning. That's rather nasty. Thanks for the details and as well for your diligence in returning what limited sanity we may find here on FPN.

I never got redirected. I guess the fake DNS entries didn't propegate to my ISP.

And let us not forget to thank a certain Admin, who spend about 72 hours of his own time, for free, in executing these monstrous tasks.

Well done Wim.

Yeah. Emergency production upgrades and fixes are never fun. :wallbash:

I'm concerned to see how much slower FPN is now. It was slower than most forums before, but is now slower than anything. Is there any optimisation that could be carried out on the server side to alleviate the performance issues.

And before anyone says it, yes, I'm on a decently fast connection, and I'm not seeing any slowdown on other forums I frequent.

The Multiquote buttons seem to be nonfunctional as well (they were before, but I hoped that the new version would fix that).

Multiquote is working for me, what web browser are you using? I find features are slow the first time I access them then faster afterwards. My guess would be that either that it's a result of my browser cache being invalided post upgrade, either that or FPN is getting cached by my ISP.

Thanks for all the hard work!

Whew, what a relief being able to get back on here.

By the way, the Birthday listing seems to have gone away - I quite liked that as it kept one sort of a little more in touch with folk. Will it return?

For me it performs quite well now.

Many pictures are externally hosted, so loading of pictures is in many cases not board related.

The reduction of the posts per page from 50 to 30 speeds up everything as the page size is reduced (in case of a page with more than 30 posts), on the other side it splits large threads in more pieces.

Thanks to all the backroom people for the hard work to get FPN upgraded and secure.

From my perspective here it does not seem appreciably faster than it was before, still one of the slower forums I frequent, but quite usable all the same.

What has changed is that I am no longer able to view FPN on my Android Tablet (10.1" Lenovo Thinkpad) using my default browser (Firefox).

It comes up with the main menu in "mobile" format whether I select "Load Desktop version" or not, all the main forums are there butwhen I click on my normal first port of call, Pen Making, all I get is the FPN header with the rest of the page blank. Same for all other forums I click on.

There is a very small box underneath the main FPN header that says Full Version, but appears to be disabled and doesn't do anything.

Shame as my Android Tablet gets used a lot to browse forums such as FPN.

BTW the above post was posted from my notebook.

I tried to edit it to add this to the post, could enter the extra text but Save wouldn't work, nor Cancel.

Right now (1015 UTC) the performance seems better to me. No rocket ship, but usable again.

I not that the New Content button works now, and Multiquoting is working too.

Keep up the good work.

It should be a bit better again, as of about 09:00 EDT, 13:00 UTC/GMT. We found two more pieces of software affecting speed rather terribly :). These are now disabled temporarily, until a fix has been found.

Warm regards, Wim

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
