Any reviews of the Pilot Petit1?

That looks to be a Varsity nib. It has the same stamped ring instead of a breather, the same flat top, and the same(from what I can see) feed.

I think that the Varsity and the Petit1 use the same nib, except that most Varsitys come with a M nib while the Petit1's come with a F nib.

The nib and feed of a Petit1 can be pulled out just like that of a Varsity, and the two will interchange and both pens will work, even though the inner feed from the Petit1 is extended.

So, one option for converting the Petit1 to eye dropper fill is to glue the section and barrel together and fill by pulling out the nib and feed unit, then filling with a syringe (to get through the cartridge spike). I guess that would make it a syringe filler.

Yep! We had a Varsity with a medium nib that we couldn't stand, and swapped it with a nib from a defective Petit1 and now the Varsity is much much better.

We just changed the nib. It worked fine.

It would be a lot easier to just unscrew the back, which is wide enough one could almost pour ink into it from a bottle. Much easier. Use the ever popular silicon grease on the threads.

Let's see...couldn't find anyone who did a conversion. I'll have to try it!

So the answers so far are : -

Am I stuck using cartridge?

Seems the easiest, but can refill so not to bad.

Could convert to filler.

Am I stuck using pilot cartridge?

Yes, and it is not the standard size, but could by the sound of it use the smaller petit one in other pilot pens.

If I want an all day user, is the Pilot 78G my best choice?

Is their not a petit style pen but full sized?

Varsity seems to be very similar.

Thanks for all the help and advice so far.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
