My newest arrival a Nakaya long piccolo compared to my usual daily users. Waterman Edson. Montblanc 149 in resin. Parker Duofold.

The nakaya is pleasing in size as I expected it to have lesser dimensions than it has.

Nakaya meets the 'boss' Montblanc in two tone gold.

Here are five different sized Nakayas from my collection (the sixth pen holding the others in place is a Neo Standard). Sorry for the iPhone shots. The middle photo is with flash.

From left to right, these are the following pens with sizes from the Nakaya website (total length in mm, followed by length without cap in mm):

Long (163, 143)

Neo Standard (150, 135)

Portable (149, 128)

Decapod (149, 130)

Piccolo (130, 116)

Some wonderful colours shine through in those photos. Great set of pens you have there.

this is a really helpful thread! I've been considering either getting the neo-standard or long piccolo, string-rolled if possible! this is so helpful with the dimensions :)

Does anybody here have both a Dorsal Fin v.1 and a Long Cigar that they could photograph next to each other uncapped? If someone can add a 17mm portable (or long) to the group as well that would be super useful!

Trying to decide what my next Nakaya should be.

Here are a few photos of my new Neo-Standard with 0.7mm stub, cut from a BB nib by John Mottishaw. It only arrived on Thursday night so I haven't had much time to write with it but there are a couple of writing samples below alongside some from my other pens. My apologies for my (lack of) photography skills!

The Neo-Standard is almost exactly the same length closed as my Long Piccolo.

Very different aesthetics!

Look how small the vintage Pelikan is compared to its modern brother. Left to right: Nakaya Long Piccolo, hairline finish; Nakaya Neo-Standard, Heki-tamenuri finish; Pelikan 400; Pelikan M800; MontBlanc Johannes Brahms; MB 146; MB 149.

Re-ordered: Long Piccolo, Neo-Standard, MB 149, MB Johannes Brahms, MB 146 and Pelikan M800 brown tortoise.

The Nakayas are not much smaller than the MontBlanc 149, although you can see the sections and nibs are a good bit smaller.

The Nakaya nib looks bigger but the MB nib lays down a fatter line that is less suited to my scrawl but is the smoothest of all of my nibs (followed by the larger Pelikan).

Sadly, not my quote but makes me :).

Overall, the most practical pen for me in the office is the Nakaya Long Piccolo - it's well behaved on nearly all paper, starts after minutes uncapped and is a joy to behold. However, its stock nib has absolutely zero character, will give no shading with any inks at all etc. The stub will be used for personal correspondence and is smooth given the cut of the nib. The MB 149 dates from 1985 (mine since new) and I had the nib ground from medium to EF last year by Michael Masuyama; it has significant feedback and is not the smoothest nib here but the transformation was a revelation. The MB 146 dates from 1988 and has been tuned by Pendleton; it also has great feedback and is smooth without being glassy smooth.

Is it an optical illusion or is the Aki slightly wider in section diameter?

I think it's an illusion.. i thought the same thing and I don't have calipers to measure it.

It may be ever so slightly wider but I think it looks much more than it is due to the shorter distance from nib to threads. It gives it a kind of stubby look.

Just got my Nakai-ai, and like seems to be the case with all Nakayas, the size is completely not what I expected. It is so much daintier than I imagined... Anyway, I'll post photos later...

Too many pens; too little writing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
