Learning To Draw With Pen & Ink

Thank you for sharing Ruth. Your paintings look very impressive.

I was on vacation last week with my family. We flew from Hanoi (where I live) to Hochiminh City (aka Saigon) then took 4 hour on train to Phan Thiet to stay in a resort name Rock water Bay. Not far from the resort is a cape, the French built a light house there 100 years ago.

I took my photo gears and the moleskine sketchbook and some stuff.

Here is some of the paintings:

I find this one from cednocon fascinating. The fountain pen + drinking straw = airbrush is a neat trick, though 6:57 shows that he may be overdoing it. Do lots of people use their Montblanc 149 for drawing? :)

Much more on his channel. Apologies if it has already been posted here.

I love your set up candidvn, very nice.

Cybaea, that video is pretty impressive; the trick with the straw is amazing. I'm not a very arty person, at all. I'm a doodler that's it.

This thread has me thinking though, especially from the books posted earlier in the year on here that I might just try my luck and learn

a new skill. Everything I've seen on here in impressive and very moving. Can't wait to dip my pen and give this a shot.

Andymc, daniellem, tennytina, where you guys at. I loved seeing your work!!

Hi, thought I would join in the fun. I did the first three examples in "Pen & Ink Sketching" by Frank J. Lohan, so I thought I would try something of my own design. Hope you like it. The color was added with water color pencils (dry).

Regards,

Dennis

Thanks, Andymc -- I've been doing a lot of drive-bys without posting; work has been crazy lately and has left me with little time for posting or even doing much sketching. Will hopefully get a break sometime soon... Glad you are inspired to join in the fun -- hope to see your work here soon, too!

I've really been enjoying seeing everyone's work in this thread! candidvn, your sketches are wonderful and made even more so by the descriptions of where you are and what you were doing when you made them. Ruth, I love your ink drawings, they have so much energy! And WOW, Dennis that bird is fabulous! Was this a sketch from a photo, or a bird drawn from imagination? Either way, really, really great! I love the subtle color that you added with the pencils, too.

Cybaea, thanks for posting that video, as soon as I get some more time I'm looking forward to going to his site and checking out more of his work. The pen/straw thing is indeed very cool.

I'll try to get some sketches done during a family vacation a few weeks ago posted here sometime soon, but in the meantime it's great to see so many people in here learning and drawing and having fun with it!

Hi daniellem,

It is from a photo I took at the zoo last year.

Thank you all for your comments.

Our topic is becoming fun. Let's keep it up. The Phan Thiet Province where I went for my holiday is hot and dry, perfect weather for planting Dragon Fruits. The dragon fruits are quite strange, the plants look like cactus, they got huge white flowers. And the fruits look like lotus flowers. Some people don't like to eat because the fruits are tasteless but many other like them.

I have been following this thread for a while. It is fascinating, there are so many fantastic sketches! :)

So I thought I would have a try... I need to get that book! Had my first FP scribble yesterday evening and boy, does it take some getting used to!

Here are my first couple of attempts - am am really stuggling with "shading":

And then to relax I did one of the "Poor Tyranosaurus Rex ..." quick pics - trying to turn off a ceiling fan:

RobertP .....nice job on the Beckett sketch. Jes enough lines and shading to convey the image.

Thanks for the compliment!

I must admit it was a bit of a struggle as I have only ever sketched in pencil before, and getting any subtleties into ink sketches seems like some kind of dark, black magic art to me ;)

I'm not sure whether most people pre-sketch in pencil then ink? I just tried to use the pen like a pencil without any previously drawn guidelines. Is that a good or a bad idea? It seemed the natural thing to do, but I would love some tips!

Cheers,

Rob

It matters not one wit. Whatever floats yer boat.

I practice my drawing BASICS (cuz I stink) in pencil, but I love to sketch in ink. It's a commitment that used to terrify me. What if I make a mistake!? (gasp) I'm sure you see it in the uneven spectacles of yer Bennett sketch. But, who gives a rodent's patoot? No longer I. I think yer sketch is killer. Keep doing it and it and you will only improve .....unlike myself and bowling. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
