La Pen Show Haul 2013

OOOOOOOOthose are rare. Very pretty. Can we get a writing sample?

This pen falls into the category of pens I will not ink. I need to ascertain how the sapphire/ruby was attached. The nib is partially crimped around the two stones. This much John Mottishaw determined when he examined the nib under his microscope. There might have been some epoxy and I don't want ink to attack aged epoxy.

That makes perfect sense. There is a reason everyone used iridium.

Wow, those are beautiful.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Love the wooden pen, the contrasting wood cap band is a really nice touch. What's the section made of and what nib did you get?

Argh! Wood clip! Ha ha ha. Next year. I'll get the wood clip Stylo Art next year -- or San Francisco, if Kazuno-san will be there. Wouldn't it be great if Stylo Art came to Poland?

The section on these two pens are a generic Bock section and nib. The nibs are F. They are tuned very well but a bit too broad for me. I'll probably grind one down to an italic and the other to a needlepoint.

The ones Plistumi, Ether, and gep bought have Pilot sections and nibs. He can make a pen body and cap that will take the section from a Falcon. His wife said they do this frequently for customers in Japan.

Also, if souljer and I buy BMW motorcycles and go missing with Frank, don't worry; the three if us will be on a cross-country "long way around" bike trip to spread PenPosse joy in the contiguous states - hahaha!

Wouldn't it be great if that wasn't just a whisky dream?

Year before last I road from Detroit to Vegas and back....and next week I'll be in South America riding all throughout Colombia with a buddy of mine.

Yep, and I'm still jealous.

How did you get a Bock nib on your wooden pen?!

I wanted a Bock nib! Okay, I really like this Pilot nib, but I wanted a Bock nib like the one on your Raden pen!

That Japanese couple's pens were among the most beautiful Raden works I have ever seen. It was sooo bright and sparkled like it had an internal glow.

I do hope they had a good show so they'll be back next year. Other than your two purchases did you get a sense they did well?

Good seeing you again too!

cheers

I'm sure they did pretty well.

As Ether said, I'm Mr. Kazuno's new best friend. There were a lot fewer pens in Friday compared to Thursday morning. I think there is a good chance to see them back next year. I might send him message to let him know the interest.

Hm, I wonder if he could do the same with a Lamy section?

The website is http://stylo-art.com/.

I find it a bit humorous because their website has been listed in the Japan sub-forum under "Current and Past Manufacturers" for years.

I think they will take internet orders. There is a 'Cart' system on the website and you can choose your pen and add to cart. They gave me a price sheet that has mostly English.

Wow... that is GORGEOUS! Congrats on a fabulous pen, Ricky. Do you know who made it? What kind of nib and filling system does it have?

It's a Stylo Art pen. Mr. and Mrs. Kazuno came to the LA Pen Show. They brought a handful of the larger Asama models done in full maki-e. According to Mr. Kazuno, he turned the pen and a close friend of his, a maki-e artist, did the work at a discount rate. When I saw the price, I bought the pen immediately. My gamble to arrive Wednesday paid off.

The pen is C/C and uses a standard Bock nib, feed, an section. The smaller Taut models use either a Bock nib or take a Pilot section (#5 nib). Mrs. Kazuno told me they have a number of Japanese customers who have custom pens made to fit their own sections.

Here were the three maki-e pens from the show.

Sailor Hieroglyphics pen

Pilot Elite

ARRRRGGGGHHHHH you are killing me. I love the Elite, but as an Egyptophile that Hieroglyphics pen is really killing me! I have been looking for one of those to no avail. I guess I have to make a trip to LA next year, unless one shows up in SF (which I am hoping to attend this year!)

Looks like you had fun!

If the picture didn't kill you, the price I paid will certainly finish you off.

Then please keep me in the dark!

I'll let you know if I find another one.

That would be great!

Did anyone see a Schnell pen? Once my daughter found out that she's related to the creator JR Schnell, she's been on a mission. I told her I'd buy her one once she has her ADVANCED degree.

I didn't see one but I wasn't looking. It's the kind of pen that requires active searching. You have a few years yet to go. :roflmho: I'll look next time I'm at a big show. It's the hunt that's exciting.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
