Sailor Hieroglyphics pen

Pilot Elite

ARRRRGGGGHHHHH you are killing me. I love the Elite, but as an Egyptophile that Hieroglyphics pen is really killing me! I have been looking for one of those to no avail. I guess I have to make a trip to LA next year, unless one shows up in SF (which I am hoping to attend this year!)

Looks like you had fun!

If the picture didn't kill you, the price I paid will certainly finish you off.

Then please keep me in the dark!

I'll let you know if I find another one.

My pen haul at the show was one pen. One. But what a pen it is -- or, rather, will be, once it's restored -- and especially at the price I paid. It's already in the mail to my restorer, so no photos for now, but I shall try to post pictures and details once it's back in a week or so. If Ricky is willing to share the thread with me, that is.

I'm glad this thread was bumped, cos I couldn't see the photos as well on my phone as now this screen. (I figured I'd get to see your pens at Pen Posse LA Pen Show Decom on Sunday, Ricky.)

So you DID get that one Japanese pen with the design element that I don't know the name of but was curious about after glimpsing your photo! The one with the recurring pattern, looks like three seeds next to each other. That one.

Wow. Can't wait to see it Sunday.

I just calculated my damage (the entire trip, not just the pens). Whew, not as bad as I'd feared. It helped that I had the Mb Semiramis to trade. (*Laughs.*) And only bought three pens. Which I want to take photos of and post. Very soon.

I wonder if Kazuno-san will be at the Boston show. Or San Francisco. Did you ask him about San Francisco, Ricky?

Also, if souljer and I buy BMW motorcycles and go missing with Frank, don't worry; the three if us will be on a cross-country "long way around" bike trip to spread PenPosse joy in the contiguous states - hahaha!

Wouldn't it be great if that wasn't just a whisky dream?

Year before last I road from Detroit to Vegas and back....and next week I'll be in South America riding all throughout Colombia with a buddy of mine.

Signature left blank per new rules...

I did not ask about other pen shows other than LA. I hope he comes back to LA.

I'm not sure SF or Boston are big enough to help offset his travel costs. Although, my posts might drum up more interest.

I'll be posting better shots of individual pens from the haul tonight. The pen you were interested in seeing is the one done using an odd Kamakura Bori pattern.

Care to share photos and a narrative? Sounds wonderful! (Details, please!)

Also, next time you ride to Vegas, you have to Pen Posse with Frank C and Amberleadavis!

Tell him you'll be at the SF show. Hee!

How many of us went to Stylo Art because of you? I still don't have a wood pen with a wood clip (or a Bock nib). So... there's that... looming....

The pen you were interested in seeing is the one done using an odd Kamakura Bori pattern.
Looks beautiful!

Sounds like a great show for you 21 pens, 1000 pictures.

God is my Strength.

It's just like you're writing with an old phonograph cartridge!

OOOOOOOOthose are rare. Very pretty. Can we get a writing sample?

This pen falls into the category of pens I will not ink. I need to ascertain how the sapphire/ruby was attached. The nib is partially crimped around the two stones. This much John Mottishaw determined when he examined the nib under his microscope. There might have been some epoxy and I don't want ink to attack aged epoxy.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
