... Homemade Leather Wrap ...

TMLee

Recommended Posts

I recently got a query on doing something of a leather wrap jacket for a journal.

I havent made one before and didnt attempt one too becos it didnt fit my idea of a journal made for journalling and especially suited to FP users.

Anyway, i was pointed to this link ...

http://www.squidoo.com/book-binding-how-to-make-a-leather-bound-moleskine-journal-craft-tutorial

I decided to try making one - not exactly the same , but roughly in concept ...

I cut out a large piece of leather , much like that recommended in the link above ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Leather%20Wrap%20for%20A6%20TMLee%20Journals/017.jpg

Here you see two greyboard covers positioned and trying out for fit and dimensions.

Marked the leathers with a stitching wheel

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Leather%20Wrap%20for%20A6%20TMLee%20Journals/023.jpg

I used masking tape to hold the pieces in position as I prepare to next do the stitching

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Leather%20Wrap%20for%20A6%20TMLee%20Journals/026.jpg

The pierced holes are very hard to see, I decided to lay the masking tape , then followed by piercing the leathers. Leathers are very hard to pick out pierced parts.

Started stitching.

I used a saddle stitch ...

and didnt know how to end the stitch

The completed flap

I ddint like the stitching becos it was not neat and pleasant looking.

I ripped out the stitches and re-stitched using slightly thinner threads ...

The journal is not glued to the leather wrap.

Here it opens flat.

This journal of mine - the spine is unglued ...

I find this kind of wraps , protect the journal from all kinds of abuse, just chuck it in a bag - it'll be very safe.

A 'chuckable' design .

This one is purpose-made for my A6 sized journals.

Its kinda like a jacket for my journals.

And yes, its all handstitched,

and my fingertips are painful ... :crybaby:

Excellent work thanks for the detailed walk through.

Can I ask do you treat the edges of your leather or just leave them unfinished.

Regards

Michael

They are not treated yet.

Yes, I will probably apply "what-do-you-call-it" on the edges.

I have five of his hand-crafted journals and the craftmanship is superb. Highly recommend his work if you need a journal or other of his products. A really great person to do business with!

Gum Tragacanth, or Wax, there's a lot of ways to finish those edges, manually i've seen some disc like things called slickers.

Looking good by the way

Very nice work! How wonderful it must be to have a handmade journal with a handmade leather cover and to know that the craftsmanship was all yours. :clap1:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
