Aurora Etiopia white ivory

Aurora Etiopia white ivory.

I am not a big Aurrora fan,not because of anything against the company just because I concetrate at Parker and Sheaffer and a man with my resorces must limit himself to few pens.

Never the less this pen facinates me especialy because of its history.

If I could choose between it and Parker Big Giant or Parker Duofold Mandarin yellow I think I would choose the Aurrora.

I would love to know if anyone here has this pen.

Do you have any idea how much this pen is worth ?

Respect to all

I have to say I have always cringed at the idea of the Etiopia. It is a pen that commemorates the conquest of the last independent state in Africa. The conquest of a very primitive state, albeit a very ancient one--and the only majority Christian state in Africa (at least then), by a European power desperate to provide itself a major power by possessing colonies is not a proud moment for Italy. Not to mention that their first invasion failed at the hands of the Ethiopian army. No, it may be an attractive pen, but it is not an attractive history!

I am of Italian descent, but am not proud of this chapter in Italian history. What would have the great Garabaldi, the liberator of Italy, thought of this?

It is rather ironic to think that Aurora came out with the Afrika a few years about (although the motifs of this pen are of Southern Africa). Have they repented, perhaps?

Hi guys,

i have to agree with Dan regarding the history behind the pen. Nevertheless this pen is extremely rare. I once bought a pen from an Italian dealer (it was a Sheaffer PFM III set FP & BP) and upon discussing more about pens the story of the Aurora Etiopia came about. He told me that he and his business partner owned one about 3 years ago, and sold it to an Italian collector for around 6500$. The pen is super rare, and at the time he said that there were about 5-10 pens known to exist. He described it as the holy grail of pen.

Hi all,

The Ethiopian is a interesting pen in all aspects and I really dig that type of pen.

Nevertheless, it seems to be a commemoration of something the ethiopians, italians and other nationalities are not surelly proud - the violent and undesired occupation of a country by other.

This bring us to the the scarcity of the pen - what are the numbers of production and how was the pen sold or distributed ? This should enlighten us on the facts or reasons behind it's rarity.

Or is it just a doctor's pen with a crest ?

I am located in Portugal and never saw one in the real life - but a portuguese collector and repairer as parts of one pen, and the cap really as a symbol just like the one on the pen reproduced in lambrou.

To my knowledge rarity is due to the fact that, with WWII just ended, name and alleged history of the pen was screaming "Look, my owner is fascist!" to the beholder.

This, combined with the colour of the pen, which made it even more noticeable, brought to mass destruction to avoid troubles.

Well known the Etiopia,

less known the universe around.

The pen was sold in second half of 1936 to commemorate the foundation

of italian empire by Benito Mussolini.

Important the color choices:

Ivory white celluloid to reflect sun rays

Red and yellow of the box are colors of Roma (Rome) Empire's capitol

and the brown as the included ink pills

An additional gadget was included in the box

an ivory white medal in Moldrite (a kind of plastic)

with engraved 9 Maggio A XIV fascist era became in 1922 year of march to Rome

when Mussolini held the power, so 1922+14=1936

with red/yellow ribbon, exactly same as ribbon of official medal commemorating the march to Rome

Born as trench pen had to be loaded with water,

or other liquid (in desert is better drink the water)

adding a ink pill, a small supply was stored in

blind cap, a larger supply in celluloid case with engraved

INCHIOSTRO COLONIALE (colonial ink)

Heh, what percentage of the world's remaining stock of these pens do you have? : )

Is it just the lighting difference between photos, or did they come in both gold and silver trim versions?

Obviously, it is a debatable pen. Since it celebrated the ultimate point of Italian Fascism, I can imaging that there will be people that object to it, despite its importance in the fountain pen history. Others may be impartial enough to consider it for it "objective" value, in terms of material, filling mechanism etc. It was only 70 something years ago, so time may or may not be enough for people to forget.

Personally, I would not be fond of a pen that celebrated the Greek dictators of the late 60s (it does not exist :)).

But I still read with interest this thread and I thank our italian friends that provided the photos of the pen and ephemera.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
