My Imperials............. stylos nos.

Hi,

very nice Imperial collection!

Imperial pens after year 1942 were made of celluloid from the new UMA company also located in Pardubice town. (I wrote about UMA company in "Polak & Lukesle - Sagitta" thread.) The second pen from 1943 is made of the early version of green-black striated celluloid which was later one of main patterns designed by chief engineer Mr. Jakubec in UMA company. The interesting fact - Brod factory (then Penco) was closed in 1953 and then the best empoyees and most precious machines were integrated into ex-Sagitta factory in same town. Then a production of completely new line of pens started in Pardubice town: Centropen 10010/11/12/14 and Barclay 1304/5 and some others.

Some of the empoyees were members of the original team hired by Jindřich Brod before WW2 and some other employees were members of Pick & Ganz prewar team (since 1901, in 1938 bought by Polak&Lukesle).

So some "genes" of J.Brod´s company survived until 1964 when ex-Sagitta factory was closed and FP production stopped in Pardubice town.

Another interesting detail about Jindřich Brod and his factory. I have found in the town´s archives an interesting files (a police investigation, in fact) about a strike incident from year 1925:

Unfortunatelly the production didn´t started smoothly in new Zavadilka factory. Maybe the shine of the brand new J.Brod&Co factory crazed some workers and in 4 march 1926 there was major strike incident. In fact, Jindřich Brod let one grinding machine be operated by a skillful woman, long-term helper employee but without any professional formation. It gave rise to a massive protest of the other workers. They all had stopped to work and presented their claims to Jindřich Brod. They wanted remove the woman worker from the grinding machine control. In their eyes she was earning too much money for somebody without professional formation. And they wanted their salary to be increased, too. Brod contradicted and argued the employee contracts were not violated, on the contrary duty period decreased from 45 to 35-40hours/week in time of sites exchange and salary remained the same. After short discussion Jindřich Brod promptly refused their claims and 90 workers of 100 employees had been fired at once. During next 3 weeks some of the fired workers obstructed other employees and newly hired workers to enter the factory. The Police set the patrol unit to watch around the place and started investigation. Finally 4 workers (2 of them members of Communist party..) were sentenced for prison penalty up to 2 years for serious violations of several laws. Sudden lack of workforce was solved by contracts with Pick&Ganz, another local lathe factory for luxurious items in Pardubice. Interesting detail: Berta Brod´s sister was Pick jr.´s wife. In 2 months the troubles were almost over and Brod was hiring up to 80 employees - many of them were of the original team (they have lost the right for paid holidays in 1926 when rehired) and a dozen of new workers.

Beautiful pen! Do you have any information on dates of production?

I really enjoy your informative posts about pens that are little known here in North America.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
