Seven New Nakaya's

It takes about 2-2.5 turns to remove the Dorsal Fin cap. I like the pen and the finish a lot. You can post easily if you wish and it reminds me of the 149 in size, maybe a touch slimmer. The Naka-ai is more like a 146. I like them equally as well but if I had to choose, I would go for the Naka-ai as my overall favorite. I use my pens more when they have a clip.

So far I purchased one from Nakaya directly and the rest via nibs.com in the US. I like that nibs.com also offers nib customization and that all their nibs are checked by an expert before going out. Most of my pens are modern, new ones and I've had my share of finicky nibs. (I'm so disappointed every time a new pen arrives and it won't write as I want it so I'll have to part with it again for a trip to the repairsman. But that never happened to me yet with a Nakaya from CFP.)

Hello elderberry,

Thanks for the fast reply. I'm going to have a look on nibs.com.

With love,

Oh, wow. 6 turns to uncap would drive me mad. How many turns to uncap the dorsal fin? And, ishime texture aside, how does the dorsal fin feel in hand compared to the Naka-ai? I think it's supposed to be heavier and it looks like it might be a little thicker. Is it front or back-weighted?

Shane1, thanks for making yourself available as a Nakaya resource. You have a fabulously diverse collection.

I have spent the past 3 years drooling over Nakaya and Danitrio pens. I do not think I will be able to buy even one in my lifetime. Your snaps and comments are my only solace.

I just picked up a couple more interesting pens. I purchased the Nakaya Portable Writer with hairline finish, ruthenium nib and clip. It has a custom medium-broad stub. I also strayed a touch and bought the Platinum Izumo in Dark Green and a Nakaya double pen sword rack in Heki.

I was torn between the sumiko and the matte (hairline), but after very intensive handling sessions of each at the SF Pen Show a couple of months ago, I decided I preferred the matte. The difference is subtle, and yet... there it is.

The matte with ruthenium trim and nib... utterly beautiful.

The Platinum Izumo looks very nice, too.

I picked up a few more pens this week and I am very excited about one in particular. I just received my Nakaya Bamboo Woods with a custom medium stub. It is an amazing pen to see in person, better than I imagined.

Other pens are:

MB Marcel Proust BP

MB Cool Blue Starwalker

Pelikan 900

Pilot Custom 823

Pilot Custom 845

I also had nibs and clips changed out on my Shu Naka-ai and my Neo Standard in Kuro. They should be back to me tomorrow. I also picked up two pre-owned Nakayas in the classifieds (Desk Pen with Stand in Kuro and Decapod in Heki) today that should be here Saturday. Will post some pics when they arrive. I will now have 13 Nakayas and my pen budget is completely depleted for this year.

That must be the most concentrated month of pen buying I have ever experienced (second hand). Marvellous.

I bet there are some that are on order as well, that were not immediately available.

I like the look of the Naka-ai blue rose raden myself.

Also, where are the Danitrios?

Enjoy your pens

John

I forgot about those. The Danitrios should be here sometime next week and I have two more Nakayas on order but have no idea when they will arrive.

That Bamboo Woods is gorgeous. That particular photo really shows it off! Congratulations!

PS: What did you change your clips and nibs to on the shu Naka-ai and the kuro-tame Neo Standard?

I was distracted by the beautiful photos of the beautiful pens and didn't read to the end of your post. Sorry about your hand! I hope it heals quickly so that you can use your Nakayas! At least you can enjoy looking at them in the mean time. Feel better!

I'm also now the lucky new owner of a Naka-ai that was looking for a new home. It's a clipless kuro tamenuri and it's a fabulous pen. It has a rhodium plated nib that makes a nice change from the usual gold. It's a cursive italic and a great writer.

Sweet! (The Danitrio's sweet, too, I'm sure!) But the Naka-ai kuro tamenuri with rhodium nib must look so beautiful!

You're not wrong, Lisa, I picked up the Dani this morning - pictures of both to follow tomorrow!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
