Thanks Lisa!

Here are some more images; I have yet to achieve Smudge Free Mastery (or Dust Free Mastery, for that matter) :)

Julie, good call - I think Kevin is pretty busy through October, but if someone else hasn't chimed in, I'll email him to find out.

Oh! I went to danitrio.com and guess what I saw under 'Basic Urushi Paintings'? The Short Octagon *and* the Hyotan (aka the "Mae West")! This might change my pen budget plans yet again... :hmm1:

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

Oo, those are nice!

Dare I share John Mottishaw's secret? Yes, I dare.

Compressed air.

He uses compressed air to blow the dust off the pens before taking pictures.

Made me look! Curses, yet again!

Have you held a 'Mae West?' I'd love to know how it compares in feel/weight/size with the Short Octagon.

I think Siv has a couple of S.O.s with the same signature as yours. Maybe he knows and will chime in. I can't help it: I always want to know everything about the pens!

Lisa, :notworthy1: thanks! I might reshoot those tomorrow.

Julie, that is my one concern - I think it's about the same size as a Takumi? My rule of thumb: bigger than a MB 149? Gotta take a pass. Same size as a 149 or smaller, watch out wallet!!!

Here are a couple of photos comparing a Mae West and a Takumi, if that helps:

fpn_1350780207__danitrio_1.jpg

fpn_1350780026__danitrio_2.jpg

Dimensions as follows (first number is Mae West, second is Takumi):

Capped length: 148 mm, 144 mm

Unposted length: 133 mm, 128 mm

Max barrel diameter: 19.4 mm, 16.1 mm

Section diameter (max/min): 14.0/13.2 mm, 12.6/12.0 mm

Capped weight: 38 g, 29 g

Uncapped weight: 24 g, 18 g

The Mae West feels great in my hand. The curved barrel is comfortable and not overly bulky. My only issue is that the section diameter is a bit on the large size and I find it fatiguing to write for long stretches; the Takumi is closer to my ideal from that standpoint.

Very cool, geoduc! That is very helpful.

Also, those are some beautiful pens, especially that blue Mae West!

Awesome! Very helpful. I love the idea of the 'Mae West' as it seems as if it would be very comfortable to hold. Yet it seems like it's still too big for my hand.

Did no one tell you that I am in the middle of a nasty divorce and that these sort of purchases are frowned upon? Have mercy on my soul...

I currently have a Mikado, a Bokashi-Nuri, a Fellowship pen, a Mae West and a 30 piece Mother of Pearl prototype FP.

I have sold off my other DT's. It is not enough, and I'm guessing that, even with Kevin's Hellish schedule, he is going to work these pens back into his life.

No Kevin? Look me straight into my eyes and tell me no.....hmmmm?

Glad to enable help. I love the kara-nuri finish and am grateful to Kevin for tracking down these pens a couple of years ago. I'll miss having him as the source of all things Danitrio.

It's dancing man, fat woman, DJ - or Koichiro Okazaki (Kogaku)

Thanks, Siv! I sure wish there was a key to connect a signature with the artist. happyberet.gif

Maybe we could create one...hmmmm

@quinden, in case you haven't seen it from the Danitrio website:

Koichiro Okazaki. Signature: Kogaku.

Title: Dento Kogei-shi. Born in 1959.

He learnt Maki-e from a master and was recognized with Kao (authorized monogram) Omote School in 1991 by Kuda Munenori of Sado (Tea ceremony). His works have been accepted by the National Art Exhibition each year since then.

Julie, I was so happy to get it I never even checked out the signature :) - I'll see what I can find out!

Tame-nuri, Tame-midori are made by Mr. Koichiro Okazaki, while the ki-dame and tame-murasaki are done by Kosetsu san (Mr. Tatsuya Todo). They signed at different places, purely base on personal preferences. Danitrio does not dictate where they sign :-)

My Mae West is probably the most comfortable Dani Trio I have (although they all tend to shrink in your hand when writing). One of the best things about it is the wonderful organic feel it has when I rub my fingers over it....uh...

Another great thing is the few number of turns to take the cap off. It is actually fun to do.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
