My next choice today needs little introduction, Cacao du Bresil. I always buy extra of this remarkable ink. I would never wish to run out because I haven't found a close comparison yet.

There is one ink I would love to try. Can anyone comment on the mythical 'Pen and Message, "Cigar"?

Have you tried R&K Sepia and/or L'Artisan Pastellier Brun Ours?

Thanks pithyprolix. I haven't tried them but have looked at reviews since reading your message and decided to order some R&K 'Sepia' and also R&K 'Thea - Sketch' in the coming days. Both of these look very interesting.

I appreciate your helpful suggestions.

Cheers G

Yes, I was meaning to add that R&K SketchInk too and I forgot. Please let us know how you like them.

i'd love to see pictures of the three. I love Shin Ryoku and I've considered the new 350. What do you think of it?

Shin ryoku is a lovely green indeed. I very much like the 350 vert Atlantide for its green-gray color. Since most of my FP-ink usage is simply for writing, I prefer the Atlantide and, for the same reason, prefer EF nibs. All of the inks behave very well on the paper I used for the pics, which is Clairefontaine Triomphe. It was a "test purchase" thus the lined style.

Today it's been:

1) diluted Birmingham Fort Duquesne Battle French Tricolor -- Cross Solo (red, F nib)

2) KWZI IG Blue #3 -- Parker Vector (pink, F nib)

3) vintage Sanford Pen-It Brown -- Sheaffer Snorkel Admiral (Pastel Green, F[?] nib)

Two pens today:

Robert Oster True Blue - Sheaffer Targa (M) -- this is a lovely darker blue that in the right light has monster red sheen

PenBBS #524 'Great Cold' - Parker 51 2020 (M) -- very dark blue black; looks black unless used next to a black ink

Sure. Get Sailor's Rikyu-cha which most people consider indistinguishable from Pen & Message (Sailor) Cigar. Anderson Pens seems to have it (the new bottling in 20 ml size). Maybe other vendors as well.

Thank you ink lovers, I have been using RikyuCha since last year and it remains a top10 ink for me.

I may have found it indistinguishable from 'Cigar' also. I may not. I guess I'll never know!

Back to basics here: Pilot Black from the curvy bottle. I do love that bottle.

Will work for pens...

  • 2 weeks later...

Two years ago I bought this bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku 100 Yrs. Fukurokuju.  Found this  too light to my taste then.  Using it in a M nib now, today.  Great green-has it matured?  I wonder!

Sailor Ink Studio 373

Pilot Blue (not sure why, but it came with the Custom 823 and it’s the ink I like most in that pen)

I’m still cutting down on my ink, paper, and pen purchases; so, my current fountain pen goal is to find the perfect pairings for the pens I have. I think I’ve achieved one with Pelikan’s Edelstein Aquamarine in my Pelikan M800 Ocean Swirl with an EF nib. So, that’s what’s in today’s daily writer. I think this is going to be my go to ink for this pen from now on.

Noodler's FPN Dumas Tulipe Noir in my Montblanc 146 Bordeaux with a medium nib. It's a decent combo, but everything performs pretty well in these vintage MB 146s.

edited to add: Actually, it’s turned into a bit of a hard starter as it’s been in the pen longer than a month. I need to try something else in this pen.

What's your (or anyone else's reading this) take on Aquamarine vs. Iroshizuku Ku-jaku (assuming you have used Ku-jaku)? I am just now learning to appreciate teal colors, and I broke down and bought some Ku-jaku, but I have not yet tried Aquamarine.

In the comparisons I have seen, the Ku-jaku looks a bit more saturated than Aquamarine (which isn't surprising), but the color differences are tough to capture on an electronic screen.

Ku-jaku is lovely, and harder to clean out of a pen than the Edelstein inks. I’d say the Pilot is more saturated. Both are great inks, but the Edelstein seem to be very low maintenance and a great match for my Pelikan pens.

Today, I’m using Pelikan Edelstein Olivine in my M400 White Tortoise with a broad nib. It’s the only ink I use in this pen. It’s a perfect pairing for me.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
