New Visconti Pens, Filling System And Nib!

Recommended Posts

So, just recently I was shown a new pen and filling system coming out from Visconti. Including a few higher end Limited Editions like a 12 Tribes and Dragon, I was shown these pens.

Coming in Two Limited Edition Versions. Transparent Clear and Blue Swirl. Both have use a similar filling as the Power fillers, except they have a connector (that comes with the pen). Similar to a mosquito.

The pens "Mosquito point", gets put on the nib, so to keep ink off the nib and section of the pen. Similar to like a Snorkel filler. In fact this was Dante's inspiration when making this pen.

This pen also has a new nib. Chromium 18 nib. I was not able to use it yet, but it looks really cool, and made for this filing system. The nib wraps all the way around the feed.

I took a few pictures, and as well there is a video showing how the filling system will work.

Enjoy!

Bry

Looks very interesting.

How do you carry that mosquito pointed thing with you to be able to fill the pen? Does it "fit" somewhere? Did I miss something in a photo?

Much will depend on how that nib writes. Many of the old school conicals were rather stiff. But then my inlaid Carenes are floaty, so if these are set wet as most Visconti, it'll be interesting. :hmm1:

Here is the official press release.

Opera Blue Typhoon & Crystal Demonstrator

Featuring:

New Smartouch tubular Nib and

New Mosquito Filler

Visconti has created two new writing instruments at the fore front of writing technology. Beneath the body of these beautiful pens lie a wealth of innovation and creativity:

  • The New Visconti Smartouch nib
  • The New Visconti 'Mosquito' ink adaptor
  • The Visconti double reservoir power filler
  • The Visconti 'hook safe lock' system

Visconti has again reinforced itself as the world's most creative manufacturer of luxury writing instruments. With innovation abound these new pens will satisfy even the most demanding pen aficionado.

Each pen belongs to the popular "Squaring the circle" collection. The Blue Typhoon resin is rich in colour, whilst the Crystal is a pure demonstrator with all internal components visible. This is the first time Visconti has made a completely clear demonstrator and two of Visconti's patented designs can be perfectly viewed: the "double reservoir power filler" prevents a fountain pen from leaking during air travel and the "hook safe lock" prevents a pen cap from coming undone in a pocket or bag.

Visconti Smartouch Tubular Nib

After extensive testing Visconti finally introduce the new Smartouch Tubular Nib. Its special shape is turned from a capillarity tube made of Chromium 18. The tube precisely wraps around the feed, resulting in a unique shape and allowing the user to fill his pen without the need to dip the entire grip and nib section into ink. This results in a cleaner and more efficient fill and, due to the nibs uniquely positioned air hole and design, the nib will stay wet for longer before drying out.

Visconti Mosquito filler

The Visconti Mosquito ink filling adaptor may only be used together with the new Smartouch nib. This interesting device attaches to the end of the pen and is used to fill the pen with ink. The adaptor avoids dipping the pen directly nib into ink and at the same time every last drop of ink will be used from the ink bottle.

Mosquito Filler: use and maintenance

  • Position the tubular nib directly in front of the Mosquito adaptor, with markings facing one another
  • Gently press the adaptor until it touches the pen section.
  • Fill the pen per instructions
  • Gently pull out the adaptor with a straight movement. Do not unscrew.
  • Wipe the nib as usual
  • Rinse the adaptor with clear water.

Warning :

  • Always put the fountain pen nib pointing the mark in the adaptor. Do not reverse or angle it.
  • Never try to unscrew the adaptor, gently pull it off the pen.

Thanks Mr B

Only 1000 pieces each worldwide, I won't be able to afford one but I'll bet there's a standard model eventually. At least a stub is an option.

The mosquito looks interesting. It's a conical nib with a Waverley style upturned tip - Dante was must've drawn inspiration from vintage Sheaffer Triumph nibs . I don't like the laser engraving on the nibs, old fashioned stamping or mechanical engraving produces a much nicer finish (I've read that it's possible to get a smooth finish with laser engraving as well; however, I've yet to see it done). Overall these are very tempting. Some questions:

  1. How big are these pens? Are they based on the Opera Master?
  2. How big is the stub? Is it a 1.3mm stub, or is it one of the smaller stubs Dante was considering introducing?

Chromium 18 must be a stainless steel alloy that's 18% Chromium, most likely 18/10 (as jar and Dan have mentioned already). Is this an alloy commonly used in fountain pen nibs, or is it something new? Whatever it is, hopefully it'll help keep the price down compared to Gold and Palladium.
