This is another version of the walnut and oak box (that is what is under the veneer) I have used a walnut burr veneer for the dark wood and a birds eye maple for the light.

<snip>

I need to cut the box in half now I hope I dont mess it up.

Red leather or brown leather ??

Thanks for looking

Michael

Oh, that is really nice. I really understand the dilemma about the colour. Brown to match the walnut or red to contrast. A pen, especially a black one, looks nice in a bed of red velvet, so I wondering if that is also true of leather. I have to imagine it. Well I am going to be no help with that. I hope that someone else who is following your creative works will chime in. Birds eye from is caused by a disease in the wood and is quite rare and beautiful.

I really appreciate your input

I purchased the birds eye maple as off cuts from a chap who makes larger boxes so it was fairly cheap.

Same with the burr walnut.

I was just experimenting taking the dark v light to the next level if you understand what I mean.

I have two small boxes and the cutlery box waiting to be finished later this week.

We will see what it looks like with some finish.

Thanks

Michael

I met with my friend the poet today and gave him the single pen box with a Parker 45 flighter inside.

He was over the moon I have to say it was a real pleasure to see his reaction.

I have started shaping the multiple pen box which is 7 cm or almost 23/4 inches.

My question is how many pen slots two or maybe three.

My wife got me some help in the form of a mini shaping tool from proxxon with one or two attachments. beats a hand file by a long way

I know have two of these as my first effort has been rescued from its 4 legged friends without teeth marks :roflmho:

I think everyone is missing a small point here, the box was GIVEN away and with a pen. What we have here fellow pen afficionados, is not just an artist and a craftsman, but a generous person. What a lovely gesture.

Thank you Dave for your very kind words I am a little  the poet who is the proud owner of this box is a former pro footballer from when they were paid a very small amount of money, He spends a lot of his time helping charities and it was nice to do something for him.

I have started finishing the walnut veneered box today although I have not cut it in half yet job for tomorrow I think.

I am pleased to say it has also found a new home with a member here and will be off on its journey soon.

Thanks

michael

First stage of finish for this box is shellac sealer.

The next and final stage will be wax polish.

All is not well in my little box world at the moment.

This box has caused a few problems I applied the finish before I cut the box in half.

I think I have been a little over zealous with the sandpaper in places and thinned out the veneer too much

The finished box looks like this I have only veneered the lid and the inside edges+

IMG_2360 by my0771, on Flickr

And the inside looks like this brown leather no magnets in this one as I thought the lid would be heavy enough on its own.

I am thinking of making a larger small box to sit on a desk top and was wondering how many pens you would want in a box on your desk top.

Thanks

Three slots seem to be a popular choice, although personally, I tend to have at least 6 pens in rotation at any given time.

The box is coming along very nicely, Michael

Looks like a nice piece or work. Congratulations. Just wish you had chosen a different title to the thread. Can't get that song out of my head........little boxes on the hillside and they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same. 1962 - wow - that's 50 years ago.

This!

That's what came to mind the moment I seen this thread. My grandpa always used to sing and play that song on his guitar. :roflmho:

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

It is finished ;) and should be with its new owner soon he might let us know when it arrives :)

So if you were to design this box would it be light wood or dark wood and would the interior be material or leather.

Thanks

Congratulations, Michael! Where are the photos of the finished box prior to shipping?!

Personally, I would for for a lighter wood with leather interior

Ok so far we have a six pen box in light wood with leather interior would that be red or chocolate brown leather or would you prefer the suede side.

most importantly what would be the length and diameter of the largest pen that might live in such a box.

Thanks for the input

Pebbled side is preferable in case of ink leakage. Red>Brown. Largest pen would need to be around the size of a MB 149.

Are you surprising me with one for my birthday? :bunny01: :bunny01:

I know I have had a little pain medication today but I dont understand "pebbled side" or red>brown.

If I was to make this box as say a prototype then yes it would be yours.

If I was making it I would start with four pieces of oak like this

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8325/8096736651_865b380384_z.jpg

IMG_2381 by my0771, on Flickr

Then I would turn them over and place them end to end and stick them together with masking tape like this

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8466/8096745240_f0c743e61a_z.jpg

IMG_2394 by my0771, on Flickr

I would then add a little glue and it would look like this

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8465/8096737947_d89f1c86a8_z.jpg

IMG_2396 by my0771, on Flickr

Add a little pressure

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8470/8096762022_cf78b3d28f_z.jpg

IMG_2400 by my0771, on Flickr

The inside would need a tray doweling and plywood like this

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8331/8096746660_49fee4444c_z.jpg

IMG_2398 by my0771, on Flickr

I hope the Mont Blanc is less than 155mm long or I will have to start again.

Oh and do I have a deadline for your birthday

I hope you like it

Awesome, Michael! That is just perfect :clap1: I love prototypes! I would be honoured to give your prototype box a warm and loving home. I'm sure my prototype pens would love to live in a prototype box :P

Pebbled side = right side up, ie. the opposite side of the suede

Red>brown means I prefer red to brown.

You have some time if it's a birthday present B)

Hiding magnets i did not explain that very well so here is a proper explanation

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8330/8099868727_d0ebd7dfeb_z.jpg

IMG_2412 by my0771, on Flickr

I found the middle of the front drilled a hole just far enough to fit one of these

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8196/8099894584_bd9b838000_z.jpg

IMG_2420 by my0771, on Flickr

Flip the frame over as realy it is just the sides at this point and drill a deeper hole how deep i hear you ask you will know it is deep enough when the magnets dont fall out.

A small piece of dowel is glued into the deep hole to stop the magnet moving around.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8334/8099877276_e9de9b67c8_z.jpg

IMG_2417 by my0771, on Flickr

So when I have fitted the top and bottom I will make sure that I avoid the magnets that are already in the frame or it will be time to start over again

At long last I have access to a camera and can show you Michael's fine work. My daughter says it looks like an ice cream sandwich. The walnut stain on the inner lip is a really nice idea. The slot turned out to be just a bit tight for a Parker Vacumatic, but is exactly right for this 1942 Duovac, which you can see in it. Sorry for the quality of the pictures. I do not take pictures very often and need much more practice.

Thanks so much for this box, Michael. It is now permanently ensconced on my desk and consequently that Duovac is going to be getting a lot more love.

Thanks Scrawler it is really strange to see the box on your desk so far away from here.

I am also pleased you have a pen that fits in it.

I hope I dont have the same problem with this one it is desgined to hold six pens.

This is the box complete i have started to cut it into the two parts lid and base.

If I was making this box for someone this is the point I would be asking her what type of finish she wanted?

wax or french polish?

Thanks for looking

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
