To Buy Or Not To Buy ... Montblanc

If you ask me, ignore the crack on the finial and start enjoying the pens. The crack does not hamper functionality and MB will charge you and do a full overhaul. You will lose the ebonite feed.

You can ask them to not replace the feed, but still have them do a service

Retaining the ebonite feeder comes with its own problems. I don't know how far that is possible uncer certain circumstances.

The case feeder and barrel section design has been changed in the last three years. i opened a new 146 recently. The case feeder no longer has a slot for the nib! The accomodating space for the nib is now on the feeder instead! the case feeder ID is smooth. if some one hacks a older nib and older ebonite feeder into a new case feeder, the assembly will not go in/crack. also the new case feeders and bodies are incompatible with older ones.

So if during the service, it is determined that the body/casefeeder needs a change, the ebonite feed will have to be jettisoned.

Best

Hari

Hi,

No, not always 18K for the 146.

Anyway, Hari is right. I didn't consider that when I gave you my suggestion in the other thread. See what they say needs replacement then we can move ahead.

yes definitely, provided it is an authentic set.

I'd jump at that if it was authentic :)

Technically... I think I am wrong.. it doesn't have a number, but I think that it is technically a 163? because it is a rollerball?

It's not a rollerball any more. The parts are more or less interchangeable. Hoping you get years of enjoyment from your pen.

Sorry... there is a lot going on.... there were two pens that were being sold for cheap ... both were misidentified in the ad

The top one was advertised as a 146 ... but I was happy to get a MB 149 ... the lower, rollerball, was advertised as a 146 RB... we have been calling it a 144 RB, but I was saying that I think the numbering system marks it as a 163 because it is a RB....

I hope to get many years out of them... Thank-you for the best wishes... after some repairs...

Oh... when I say somebody offered... what I mean... is that I found it for sale on craig's list... it was listed for more... I countered.... He offered it for 125$

I kept wondering why the seller was being called my friend.... I kept re-reading my OP... then I thought... OH... "offered"

Turns out, the 149 FP was a college graduation present, years ago, and he bought the 163 RB for work.... He ended up going even further down, because there were some small cracks....

I should send him a Christmas Ham.... and mashed potatoes... he just didn't know what he had...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
