Mandarin Duofolds, Bandless Duofolds, And Dj 51's

Hi,

I just wanted to get the expert's opinions on some pens that have recently sold on ebay. I am in the market for a nice vintage Duofold or double jeweled 51. The pens below all look so clean and ready to write with - would anyone recommend buying a pen from this seller? I believe he has sold pens under two names, jeujeff and jeffriad. Any comments about the pens or the seller would be appreciated.

There's been much discussion on "the other" pen board about these being fakes. I'm not expert enough to know how one could tell, but perhaps you might try sending email or a PM to David Nishimura to see why he thinks they're not legit.

I am trying to figure out how so many of these pens wound up in Buson. Parker perhaps had a secret factory there.

I forgot to let you know that the fish scales worked out nicely.

Actually, we may have found the answer to the Parker-factory-in-Shanghai mystery. It troubles a few people, such as me, that we hear in pendom about how the Shanghai Hero pen company arose from the ashes, or the confiscation, of a Parker factory in Shanghai. What troubles an easily confused person like me is that nobody in the Parker community has ever come forward with a Parker pen made in Shanghai, although China is not the world's smallest country and its population includes people who can read and write. What I never thought of is that Parker Shanghai may have been manufacturing pens exclusively for the Korean market. Perhaps even for a small part of Korea.

Given the volume of discussion about those particular pens and their maker, I'd advise you to stay away and look elsewhere. There are lots of other sellers with unimpeachable reputations. A budget of $250-300 should get you a nice DJ 51.

Okay, this guy has sold at least 20 mandarin yellow duofolds, both junior and senior combined, in the last year alone. All of them seem to be mint condition...I'd be curious how many dealers have sold this many in such a short time?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
