Writing Slope Dilema

Love the royal blue suede, Michael! Extremely regal and extravagant :bunny01:

Do we have to bow and curtsy when the lid opens?

"Yer royal 'inkness..."

Yup! And don't forget to scatter the rose petals as the pens proceed out in procession .....

Michael,

Do you mind taking a photo of the blue suede and the fuchsia leather side-by-side together? I think they would make a beautiful match!

Warm regards,

Has me wondering what Royal Purple would look like. That blue is lovely!

As for the name of the bigger box thread, I like mhguda's suggestion.

These two hides are very different the pink one is goat skin I think and has been finished on both sides one leather and one suede.

The blue which is called cobalt blue is pigskin and is only finished on one side although they say unfinished it is smooth and this is often used for lining.

I used black pigskin to line your pen wraps FP.

The pink is a third of the size of the blue and therefore more expensive.

As for the new thread I was toying with the idea of just boxes and archive both of the other threads.

Although I do like to do little boxes when I can not do the larger projects so I am not sure.

By the way I have everything to make your replacement trays for the Art decco box.

But if you archive these older threads would they still be accessible to us readers? There is some nice eyecandy there! plus helpful info that can stand re-reading...

The inserts are not fixed in place yet as i need to line the main box then check the fit of the traysthen I can apply the finish and fit the inserts.

Nice!!

I cut cardboard templates for the top and bottom before I added the base and lid the sides were cut after the base was in place.

I only glued the edges that were turned over on the bottom piece the sides were glued all over as the trays will touch the sides as they are lowered into place.

Nothing is fixed in place yet I need to seal the box and once it has dried I can glue the lining into the box and try the trays I expect I will have to take a couple of mm off each tray.

Thanks

Michael

Definitely yes! Useful threads on FPN do not get removed. You can use the search function to find this thread, or mark it as one of you favourites

why not simply go for bigger boxes by michael. I liked the Little boxes title, it made the thread very "findable", if that's a word... Good luck with this, I don't think I've posted to your threads before but I like to read and look at the beautiful pictures.

I like bigger boxes I will start the new topic with the final pictures of alc3261s box soon thanks.

I did say I would offer a prize and I was thinking a small box would be a good prize if you would like one.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks

Michael,

I am so pleased that you will be using my suggestion for a name. And I like it that you honor your pledge of a prize. Plus, I'm sure you will enjoy working on another box. So do call the box mhguda's box, that does please me. And if you want to give it away, fine. But, I find the gift of it to me too generous, and I feel I cannot accept it, for such a small thing.

In addition to which, the postage would probably take the fun out of giving it. Keep it yourself, use it, and remember the fun you we had that led to its making. It will be nice to know that somewhere in the world someone will be using a box with my name on it.

Thanks!

They look absolutely gorgeous, Michael! Unfortunately, the fuchsia isn't terribly bright, especially next to the cobalt blue. Thank you for taking the time to post the photo

That turned out wonderfully, Michael. :notworthy1: Is that the fumed oak veneer on the interior of the lid? What a nice mixture of colors and textures - can't wait to see it in person!

I have now removed the veneer which was well past its best and can now repair the structure of the box the top pannel has shrunk by 5mm.

Regular watchers will know that the old veneer is held in place with hide glue which can be softened with an iron and a little steam.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
