Writing Slope Dilema

my63

Recommended Posts

I have a handy hint for anyone who might be planning on working with wood and especially shellac dont let any moisture near the shellac.

What happens is you have a beautiful flat smooth surface that has milky white blotches under the surface.

The next thing to do is spend the next three hours with a piece of sandpaper rubbing it all off :headsmack: :bawl:.

I know I am learning some important lessons here because my arm hurts.

Thanks for not laughing

Michael

Yes, shellac can be pretty tricky! When I work with it, I prefer to put it on in thinned coats. It definitely takes longer (1.5-2x longer actually) but it really reduces the chances of the hazing appearance. (It also looks a little better IMO, but that's always up for debatelaugh.gif)

Thanks ajzeller

I think we are on the final steps now the beautiful leather I had intended to use is too thick so it is back to the origonal faux suede.

Let me know what you think the glue was still wet when I took these pictures I will wait to see in the morning.

I have started applying the wax finish if all is well with this surface I will only have to apply the felt base and it is finished.

I am not going to delete the previous post but please ignore it.

the faux suede looks really good on the pen trays but does not work as the writing surface so that material is now in the bin.

I bought some more thinner leather no red so I thought brown might be good unfortunatley not.

So it was back to the red i already have I have made some adjustments to the box to enable the red leather to fit

And it does

I just need to stick it down

It is finished although I am very pleased with it the writing slope is by no means perfect.

I have left the finish as wax it smells as good as it looks.

VERY snappy.

I have just ONE issue and I beg you will forgive me for mentioning this...but...

With hinges like that, it does rather break up the continuity of the writing-slope. Otherwise it looks dandy.

It's been wonderful to follow your adventures throughout the summer in this thread. Great result! Will you be using it yourself, or are you considering selling it?

Thank you for your comments.

I have really enjoyed this process and I have already bought the next three boxes so there will be more.

The next box has a lock but no key so I will try to show how to make a key (hopefuuly) I have done it once so we will see.

What to do with this box has been a difficult decision as I have spent so long working on it.

As I dont have enough pens in my Parker Duofold and Victory collection to fill the slope that I already have, So I have decided to let this one go.

The box will only be sold on this forum as I have desgined it to hold fountain pens and hopefully to be used for writing.

I did not set out to make money from this project so placing a value on it is very difficult for me, This is required for a classified advert.

Hopefully I will be able to offer it as a trade to increase my collection rather than just sell it.

I hope this post is within the rules and would be happy to alter it if it does not.

Thanks

Michael

Michael,

Really an amazing transformation. I've followed this thread from the beginning and never for a moment thought that you would be able to start with that beat-up, practically trashed, remains of a writing slope and finish with something perhaps even better than it was when new. The hours you've spent were a work of love and well worth all your effort.

I am about to start the next project and was wondering wether I should start a new thread or just continue here and maybe change the name to writing slope restoration or similar partly because I misspelt dilemma and partly as it would no longer fit.

Project Two

Locks

This is a very simple lock and I hope that by explaining how it works I will be able to make a key for it.

The lock is made from a brass backplate and top with mild steel side and cover.

This box has been closed many times on a lock that was locked causing damage to what I will call the pins.

I have added some text to try and help you to understand

These pin form part of the lever on a larger lock the levers are separate. There is a slot in these pins that holds a small piece of sprung steel

Hi Michael, thank you very much for mini tutorial on the inner workings of the lock :notworthy1:

What did you use to brush down the brass?

Hi Fuscia princess

I used the small paint brush that I use for spreading glue that has gone hard.

Low tech but it works.

Since those pictures were taken this morning I have laid a piece of wet and dry paper on a board and rubbed the lever pin section along it.

I have rubbed a small file along the brass where pieces meet smooth works better.

key 3 by my0771, on Flickr

Next step is to take a hacksaw to the key and remove the unwanted material from the bit to allow the cover to be fitted back into place ( i will look for a smaller key)

Hope this is clear

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
