Suggestions for mixing a professional dark green?

I would like to create a green ink color that is professional looking for exams (there are no strict regulations, except that we should not use orange or red ink), so I would either have to add this to a dark blue or a black. I assume that if I add green to black the green hue would be imperceptible. I recently ordered waterman blue black ink and green ink, do you guys think that mixing these two would give me a color that would be presentable/professional?

Adding lighter to darker is always going to be more muted than darkening a lighter color. Perhaps if you were adding black to green you could get a nice very dark green/black?

At least to me, WBB already looks like it's got a greenish undertone, so adding a brighter green (I'm assuming you meant Waterman Green based on sentence structure?) might minimize the darker blue/black part of the spread.

Personally, I'd just create a blend of green and keep adding black until it looks dark enough to be usable. :)

Take a look at this thread, green and brown mixes, it might give you some ideas.

I have Monteverde green and brown, both of which are very similar in color to the Pelikan, and I was able to get very similar results. The moral of the story is that a brown will also darken up a green that may be too bright.

Mixing Waterman Green with Pelikan Blue-Black makes a colour that looks like a lot like a blackboard. Maybe you could get something similar with the Waterman BB?

To make you aware, blue dominates green in mixing. So you will probably have to use 2:1 green:blue, or even more green, to get a color halfway between. Black dominates any color as well, so to get halfway between green and black you would go about 6:1 green:black.

My ratios may be a bit off, but the general idea is correct. This is from personal experience mixing colors (which is subtractive color theory).

Diamine makes a very pretty green-black, so there's no need to experiment if you like their inks. It doesn't have some of the properties I demand, so I don't use it.

I mixed some Private Reserve Sherwood Green with Quink Black and it is fabulous. I did it at a loose 1:1 ratio. I'll see if I can get a scan of it tomorrow.

As to Amity's comment about needing to do a 6:1 green:black ratio--wouldn't that depend on the relative saturations of the inks used?

Adding lighter to darker is always going to be more muted than darkening a lighter color. Perhaps if you were adding black to green you could get a nice very dark green/black?

If the ratio is the same, how does it make a difference which one gets added to which?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
