Deep Purple Shimmer

I just love the shimmer of J.Herbin's 1670 so much, that I have decided to try mixing it with various inks and see what I get. Here's my first go round!

Interesting mix.

What made you choose that particular combination?

very nice! how much of each did you put in?

According to the writing sample there's 2/3(?) of J. Herbin and 1/3(?) Asa Gao with 2 drops of Diamine Eclipse. Maybe it's 2/3 of a drop of JH and 1/3 of a drop of AG? Unfortunately, my fractional dropper is not working so I can't try.

1 x JH

2x Asa Gao

6 x Eclipse

I will try it on my multiplication dropper as soon as I get some Asa Gao ;)

I like that very much, and am quite frankly surprised. I have found 1670 to be a finicky ink that does not play well with others. Just a little contamination of certain other inks on the feed has been enough to render 1670 quite ugly. But this is a beautiful deep plum with lovely sheen and shading.

Let me clear this up! I was using a converter for measuring, the converter I was ultimately going to fill with the mixed ink.

So, it is 2/3 a converter of 1670, then I dumped that into a small plastic cup. I rinsed the converter. Then I got 1/3 the converter of Asa-GAO, and dropped that into the same small plastic cup. Then I used a syringe to put literally two tiny drops of Eclipse also into the cup. I mixed it in the cup and then sucked it up with the converter.

Sorry guys! It was my first recipe. In the future I will figure out a way to be more precise!

Thank you for the clarification! I'm DYING to try this out as well as some similar stuff while i'm waiting for samples of asa-gao and eclipse to arrive. Thanks so much! (Love your album btw)

I did not know you had taken to mixing inks and making originals. You'd think there would be mixing kits and of course like in the WWII timeframe ink was sold as a pellet that you'd mix with water. Where can a person find ink tablets?

Rob Maguire (Plse call me "M or Mags" like my friends do...)I use a Tablet, Apple Pencil and a fountain pen. Targas, Sailor, MB, Visconti, Aurora, vintage Parkers, all wonderful.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
