Bonhams Pen Auction, June 11: The Wilmore Montblanc Collection

No, for example the Hemingway went for $3500 inc premium. that's approx $3k for the seller and that's a good price (for the seller).

I believe the popular ones are sold mostly in line with market value, e.g. the JP Morgan 888 sold for $4.75k which is a reasonable outcome.

BTW the Imperial Dragon 3 piece set went for $11.5k and that's surprisingly high.

Best regards, Kai

Montblanc 144G Grey, 146G Green Striated, 146 Silver Barley, 149 (50s-00s).

I was surprised at the number of pens that didn't sell, and quite a few fetched lower prices than their estimates. The Jules Verne 3 pen set fetched exactly the same price as the Jules Verne FP, but quite a few of the ones I had earmarked typically went too high when you bear in mind that 25% premium had to be added. I actually managed to bid on only one WE FP but it went for the next bid above mine. Drat!

I've been following the Bonham's auctions for a few years. Today's results are actually pretty good for them. MB pens usually sell. They have fewer unsold items than in past auctions. It's rare to see prices above their original estimated range. Most of these pens are readily available on the open market. Only a handful of pens usually sell for above their estimated range.

Speaking of the Verne, one changed hands at our Pen Posse on Saturday. I think the winning bidder for the one at Bonham's would cry if they knew how much the one sold for at Pen Posse.

The prices aren't that great for the seller. Remember that the seller has to pay a commission for each item sold and a fee even if the item is unsold. Then there is a flat 1.5% warranty fee on each lot so it all adds up. Auction houses make money on both ends of the transaction.

That Hemingway struck at $3500 inc. premium but the 25% premium means $2800 hammer price. Then the seller has to pay the commission and other fees and the actual amount the seller is getting is a lot less.

PS- Loren, there must be someone out there willing to pay $10K for your Imperial Dragon set if the someone is paying $11.5K. :P

What will be more interesting to me is the Swann Galleries auction in the fall. Swann is doing only vintage and there will be quite a number of vintage MB including a sizeable number of 138'sup for auction.

Well - some of my predictions were right and some way off!!

I'm pretty annoyed as I failed on my Verne BP bid and the unopened one next went for less than my bid on the opened one :-(

I should have got up at 2am to do a phone bid.......

I missed out on my 75th anniversaries and I bid above the high estimate for both - thought they were low estimates.

Wished I'd bid on the Christie Vermeil and the Oppenheim 888 - both of which were passed in.

Still I got a couple...... and it wasn't me bidding on the Black Widow (I wish....)

Even those that went "low" at the bid price had to add 25-35% (premium + sales tax) which then made them not-so-low.

And, dang you Loren for seeing that pen for sale before I did. Wish that I'd seen it first, but then that's the 3rd or 4th time this week that I've not been first :-)

The 25% does make a huge difference but when you can get a rare MB limited edition for 40% of the new price, including the 25%, in my view - that's good value.

Gee. I guess I am too late to see this post. Congrats to those who gotten the nice catalogue. I should have paid more attention to FPN. :bonk:

I was too late, also. I happened to log onto eBay about 10 minutes after one of these very catalogs had been listed for $20, buy it now.

Mine wasn't free, but the luck of being in the right place at the right time, and I got one for less than Bonhams charges.

The catalog is worth having- beautiful photos of beautiful Montblanc writing instruments!! Gives a price range (expected / anticipated auction price) and, so, the catalogue can serve as a reference to us LESSER collectors than Mr. Wilmore.

Try the Bonhams website. They sell the catalogues for thirty bucks, or something. Worth it!!

Good luck-

Love,

Joe

Will it be possible for the prices attained to be posted in this thread at some time ?

You can watch here... most seem low... must not be serious demand right now...

...in Europe 20,900€!

At that price, I'd take 3! But sadly, you have only 2 available, so I'll buy a Bic. :)

Hmm, I got mine free. I registered once several years ago, have bought things from them and they kept on sending me catalogs even by Fedex or UPS...

I would be interested to know that too.

I actually only managed to get 2 bids in on one pen, but I was being good and waiting for the one I wanted. Then after I didn't win it, I bought it cheaper on eBay. Hey ho. :)

I see a White House pen has appeared on eBay now. I wonder if that's Wilmore's?

I bid on the Chaplin and the Black Widow (Edition of 8) but pulled on each of those items at least 15% before the final hammer. In my view, the final hammer prices, once you factor in premiums and taxes, were just silly (at least on a few of the "higher-end" pieces).

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
