... Midori Writing Pad ...

Recommended Posts

This is a review of a MIDORI letter writing pad (unlined)

Its a letter pad size very close to B5 size.

Pictured with the newest addition to the family - a PILOT Custom 823 <B> Stub DIY Amber.

(remarkable pen - pleasantly surprised)

I cant read Japanese.

Those of you who can, may want to help shed light on the words you can read.

Graphics depicting FPs , so I assumed this paper was fit for FP inks...

The brand at the bottom.

Very elegant design - MIDORI - all their products exude very quiet elegance.

The pad comes with 2 sheets containing 4 pages of instructions ! You would think why a writing pad requires instructions !

The writing pad is interesting,

it contains a total of 50 sheets.

but contains both white and cream coloured paper in equal quantities.

The papers are thin.

I cannot find info on this, so I dont know whats the grammage.

It seems to me thinner than 80gsm paper.

Here you see the guide paper underneath a white sheet.

Its see-thru

A SHORT WRITING/INK TEST

I did a quick test using whatever already inked pens I had.

as you can see, no feathering whatsoever ...

The reverse page - no bleedthrough whatsoever too ...

closeup

Here you can see 'shadow' or 'show-through'.

But it is perfectly acceptable becos of :

1) thinness of paper;

2) whiteness of paper;

3) darkness of ink

Notice the blue has least shadow.

So this means that a lighter shade of ink will have even less 'shadow'.

Purchased from KINOKUNIYA at SGD$8.65 which is pretty $premium priced.

In any case, its a nice quality paper ...

the paper is not supersmooth like you commonly find in made in Japan papers.

This one has texture much like ordinary copier paper.

I generally prefer B5 sized papers for letterwriting. Its a much more comfortable size.

Nice paper

Thanks for the review. I have used Midori paper and think it is excellent, but have not seen in it writing pads before. I will definitely look for some

I have used Midori notebooks with great success. I love the thin paper, which is incredibly fountain pen-friendly. I didn't know it was available in writing pads. I wonder where I could find these online...

In what form are your Midori papers?

Loose sheets ?

This is my first experience with them.

I have another Midori pad but that doesn't take ink well.

I will put up a review next

Soon when I can.

As you describe it, the paper sounds just like the paper Midori uses for the thinner refills for their Traveler's Notebook...and I love the performance of that paper (and the notebook)! I had no idea Midori made pads. Yet another thing to seach for

From whom did you order this? I love every Midori product I've ever used. The MD notebooks are incredible (they put Rhodia and Clairefontaine to shame!)

I bought the pad from a KINO... B&M store here.

There is a website for Midori and I saw that pad featured there but I can't seem to retrieve that webpage again :(

In my experience, Japanese papers have been very very consistent in quality.

Brands like KOKUYO or MARUMAN or here like MIDORI are excellent quality.

I have Midori MD notebooks and a spiral bound notebook. I love the paper and would use it much more if I could find it as either loose sheets or in a writing pad such as yours. Neither is currently available in the U.S. as far as I have been able to determine.

After reading your review I did some more searching but still was unable to find a seller for writing pad in the U.S. Hopefully it is a new product that will be introduced here soon.

Very interesting. Too bad I didn't see your review here before hitting Kinokuniya in Manhattan a few days ago: I picked up a long-awaited 30ml bottle of Pilot Blue ink and an A5 size Figurare double-spiral notebook (which is quite nice). Will investigate in another day or two if they stock either the notepad and/or notebook.

Glad to hear you like your 823!

Update: stopped off at Kinokuniya tonight (sharing a cab with a client back to Brooklyn failed miserably, so I figured, if I have to be stuck there...). The very helpful woman downstairs told me they haven't had that particular pad in a little while, but will try to get it back in stock. (They had lots of other stiff from Midori, including one pad I'll write about a little later). Meanwhile, I will say that the Figurare notebook I picked up from them a few days before is fierce.

  • 3 years later...

3 years late to the party...

I found one of these pads at Maido in San Francisco and snatched it up. It's absolutely wonderful and I'm running out of paper fast. Unfortunately I've moved out of California and I'm having trouble finding the pad online. Anyone encountered these in the meantime and have any suggestions?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
