When was the list last updated? I think we would be well over 800 by now.

Just updated the list - we've got 828, but there are, of course potential duplicates - or close duplicates. I'm trying to be reasonable - the existance of xxx and xxx Pen could go either way, so I kept both. Tombow and TomboW seemed to be duplicates so I only listed one (probably the wrong one... <_< )

Here's the updated post.

Wonder if it should be pinned?

Wonder if it should be pinned?

This is an excellent resource and should definitely be pinned!

Here's a thought: what if each manufaturer's name was linked to an image of a generic model? Doing that for 8-900 pens is a tall order but even if 15-20% could be found that would probably be an order of magnitude greater than other on-line brand databases.

Thoughts/comments?

The only problem the list is mixing pen companies and model names.

For example Shirley Temple is not a pen companie but a Wearever (I think) produced pen.

Maybe we need some kind of wikipedia setup for this info, so that we edit and classify appropriately. Do we have someone with experience here?

FWIW, Shirley Temple, Leeds, Onward & Treasure are all sub brands of Wearever. Tarco & Duvan are possibly sub brands as well. I'm still trying to track down the needed info, but all info to date says they are.

Founded in 1896 as David Kahn inc.

Sold to Dixon approx. 1970

Still in production today as a line of cheap "stick bic" style pens.

Continuos production for 110 years. How many other co's can claim that?

Just my 2 bits worth

Just added your info Denis. Thanks. When / if you advise re the Tarco & Duvan, I'll remove the question marks.

Gerry

PS: I have always chuckled over the entry 'Frankenpen'. Do you suppose that there actually was a pen marketed under this name??? I'm pretty dubious - it may just hav been included originally because so many people claimed to have a Frankenpen.

Don't forget to add polish brands from Poland.

The firma K. Wasilewski opened earlier a pen factory in Poland than MontBlanc in germany.

He won some prises at penshows in Europe in the early 30'

...

Tom, welcome to FPN.

George Kovalenko (rhr on this board) would be probably happy to find more about polish brands.

I am not sure if you have anything to do with it but there is this web site:

http://www.kem.adn.pl/ in polish - it would be great to have it in english :)

He pointed this site out few days ago on Pentrace.

Thanks for all the additions to the list.

However, this is an old list on an old thread. Gerry took over the list and has been keeping it up to date here. We should make sure to add any additions in the up-to-date post.

Thanks for mentioning that John. Just to ensure that this thread stops - I'll close it to further posts. Hopefully I'll get to updating the DB in the near future...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
