This Is Awesome. A Brand New "broken" Nakaya

I don't specifically like the looks of "aged" items (pre-worn jeans are silly, like a pre-rusted truck, it would just need to be repaired sooner), but using aesthetic flaws as a decoration is definitely right up my alley.

For one person the piece of wood with a knot in it is devalued, for another the knot makes the wood more valuable. Sometimes a perfect circle is just crying for some irregularity.

Wabi Sabi is ain't. That comes from real usage. If I had a Nakaya and I wanted it to look distressed, I'd give it to my daughter to take to the playground.

But that's not wabi-sabi at all... it's the aged broken in/worn look from years go gentle use. I could make it look broken, just by running a car over it a couple of times... but that's not what it's supposed to look like.

I said that I'd chose to have my kid beat it into submission if I wanted it to be distressed. I did not say that would lead to wabi-sabi. Then again, neither does this artisan.

At 1st glance I was appalled to think of doing that to a Nakaya, then at 2nd and 3rd, I started to like it.

Is there an actual lip where the crack is ? Could you catch a fingernail on it.

You have good taste Ether. :notworthy1:

Maybe it's just me and my poverty talking here but if I spend that much for a pen, I want it to be perfect? While I can see some of the appeal, the pens are just so pretty on their own. Maybe better in person. It does look like there's a bit of a lip that would get annoying.

I think it looks pretty in its own way. If I had the money, I wouldn't mind picking up one of them. But then again, I'm also fond of the Fender relic guitars ;)

I think it's pretty cool and I'm not even a big fan of those finishes.

It reminds me of the very well done "battle damaged" model planes I'd seen when I was young.

The Urushi is supposed to be somewhat unique to each pen. Ether strikes me as someone who takes pride in her personal "style". It seems perfectly logical to me that she'd want her Urushi to be even more unique than usual.

Nothing like a naturally worn leather couch, jacket or notebook. I like worn used objects, they eliminate the stress in me that I see people have over protecting every new shiny object.

It isn't my cup of tea, but I do appreciate the beauty of it. I like seeing the layers underneath. It's kind of like a demonstrator urushi pen--you get to see what's deep down on the inside. I'm glad someone owns that pen and loves it.

I see and appreciate the perfection in this pen. It doesn't say anything negative about those who don't see it. Viva la difference!

Since it is Lisa's pen, I just want her to enjoy it. I'm sure I would find more beauty in the ones she has distressed herself, but that's just me.

Thanks for your input! Concise, decisive, and divisive. And now I'll take the liberty of disregarding it just the same.

Beautiful pen, Lisa!

And yes, I know it's bourbon.

Thank you, Mike. That was very tactful and kind of you.

I like the philosophical perspective, "perfect imperfection", the transient nature of possesion.

Over time, the pen will acquire those other little personal scars that impart character.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
