Diamine Sepia Mini Review

Here is a mini review of Diamine Sepia. My scans aren't the best, so please note that the color is a touch darker in real life than it shows on my screen. Please disregard my spelling (Shadng) and the water drop (but this should at least inform you to Sepia's abilities to handle water).

 

For the Sepia, I used a 540 TWSBI 1.5 nib for the first two title lines and a TWSBI 1.1 for the rest.

 

For the Ambre, I used a Lamy Safari with a 1.1.

 

Both are smooth-writing inks. Not very wet at all. I think the Ambre was a bit drier though. Good flow properties for both.

 

Both are SUPER shading inks. Ambre de Birmanie is a bit lighter in color. As a result, I can get more shades of color. Not exhibited here in my scans, but it is Intense. Sepia seems to be several shades darker than the Ambre, but still in the same general color range. Sepia also shades like crazy. You can't see this in the scan, but there exists almost of a dark "outline" shading property around the letters using Sepia, especially with the 1.5 nib.

 

Ambre is a bit more "mustard" for those who don't have a lot of experience with lighter shades of amber.

 

I wish my scan came out better, because the colors on paper are incredible compared to what is on the screen. These are the best inks I've found to date that fall within the gold color range. A+ Recommend.

 

While you might be able to get away with using Sepia in the office, I'd stay clear of the Ambre. It is a light, low-saturation ink that works better for personal correspondences or art.

Fantastic review. Now if anybody seems to be in need of an ink that shades... (also try on Apache for size).. well, I too have both of the inks you mentioned and still don't know which one is "better". "Sepia" as a name, however, is very diversified. You can compare a dozen inks all named "Sepia" an they're all different. (I forget where the site was.)

Mike, good point. "Sepia" is very wide. The Diamine Sepia didn't seem like a Sepia as I was familiar with (photography), but it is a very nice ink.

Gorgeous ink and great review! Very similar to Noodler's Apache Sunset (which I'm passionate about ).
