I was reunited today with this 0.7 mm Pentel Kerry, which I hadn't been able to locate in some months (I do have a second one). Today, someone at work found it in our rarely used technical library, which is mostly obsolete or seldom used technical manuals. He figured it must be mine. It helps to have a reputation. :)

[EDIT] Afterthoughts.

I think it must have been back in July that I'd lost this, when I was looking up the specifications for some of our older RF amplifiers.

I'd been really annoyed with myself, as I usually don't just leave my "nice" stuff lying around at work and forget where I put it.

A Kuru Toga from Uni:

It's got a self-rotating lead! (There's actually a small window near the tip where you can observe the rotating mechanism). Apparently, the lead also slides down automatically - both mechanisms are triggered by pressure. It only has a 0.5mm lead (I prefer slightly bigger ones), but it's durable and writes a nice, fine line without breaking so far.

Plus, it only took 7 days to arrive here from Japan. I'm constantly impressed with Japanese products and services. :)

Re: Koru Toga Try: Jet Pens. They carry multiple versions and at least one is available in 0.7mm (No affiliation, just long term satisfied customer.)

...my Pentel Kerry, one of the coolest mechanical pencils in my opinion.

But I didn't like the knurled middle part (joint) too much, that's why I made a little modification on my lathe...

Interesting. I was thinking that I'd never seen a Kerry that looked like that. You did a very neat job.

  • 1 month later...

Today was a day of editing a draft with a Mitsubishi Vermilion/Prussian Blue editing pencil, which is great to use, but is probably no different than a pencil crayon (?)

I bought one last week . . .
Oh my! Smaller than I'd thought but way nicer than I thought too.

It has that un-put-downable quality about it. Pure joy.

Glad you were re-united with yours.

Alvin "Pro-Matic" MC5 2mm lead holder with lead I extracted from a USA Gold pencil.

I'm starting to see 2mm mechanical and clutch pencils in more stores. I hope the format is becoming more popular. It's been my favorite for years.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
