OK, everyone.

Time to choose materials.

If you are not up to speed with what is going on, see this thread....

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/215855-official-edison-group-buy/

I have five materials to choose from. Whichever material receives the most votes will be the pen. We'll leave this poll up for a week, or until there is a clear winner.

PLEASE NOTE - if you don't plan on participating, please don't vote! We would like to be sure that the voting is truly representative of the people who will be purchasing the pen.

You will notice that none of these pens are engraved yet. In the final version, there will be an engraving with the name of the pen (still to be determined), and also the number within the edition.

First up is Beige/Black Swirl Ebonite. This is a material that I've only used 4-5 times, and this was 2-3 years ago, when the manufacturer was still prototyping the material. There are only a handful of Edisons that have been made from this, and only one in the last few years. No Pearls have been made from this. This takes a great shine, as you can see. Price will be $190.

Next is Bedrock Flake Acrylic. This has always been a good seller for me. It has good depth, and takes a fantastic shine. Price will be $170.

Next is Neon Swirl Acrylic. This also has been a good seller for me. This has lots of pearlization and depth. Price will be $170.

Next is Midnight Swirl Acrylic. This has not been used extensively by me. I would guess about 5-6 pens have been made from it. This has fantastic pearlization and depth. Price will be $170.

Last is Cobalt Fleck Acrylic. This has only been used 2-3 times before, and never in a Pearl. A very vibrant color, great depth, and also a great shine. Price will be $170.

So I think that covers it. Refer back to the original thread for the plan, but we will leave this poll up for a week or so.

After the material is chosen, we'll have a time period for buying, order materials, and then it's time to make pens!

Lastly, just so you know, whatever material will be the final pen will be exclusive to this Limited Edition for one year. This means that not only will the engraving make this a Limited Edition pen, but there will be no Edison Pearls made from the material nominated for a period of one year.

Put any questions here...I'll be watching the thread.

I will refrain from voting, but I will say that I especially do adore the Cobalt Fleck, and I really like the Midnight Swirl too... they were both contenders for our new Edison Nouveau currently in the works (but we decided on different materials). They are gorgeous in person. The Bedrock Flake is too, actually. I haven't seen the other two in person, so I can't say anything there. Either way... can't wait to see the outcome!

I was really hoping for a blue so my vote is for Cobalt Fleck that looks fantastic with the silver nib and trim

What is the (visual) difference between this Cobalt Fleck acrylic and the Cobalt acrylic (photo #366 of 477 in your Smug Mug account for the Pearl)?

The regular Cobalt is only pearlized. The Cobalt Flecked has flecks. Also, looking them live next to each other, the Cobalt Flecked is a deeper blue, less saturated.

Actually, maybe I should have picked a different name than Cobalt. They are very different.

Thank you Brian for some outstanding choices. I can honestly say that however the vote turns out, I'm going to be happy. There is not a single material that I dislike. That being said, I like some materials more than others. Therefore, since we are voting for a pen that we are willing to purchase, is it possible to change the poll so we could vote for more than one pen, ie- vote for the pens we would be willing to purchase?

I am in regardless. I could live with all of those choices.

Just for the heck of it, here's a rank:

1. Beige/Black Ebonite

2. Cobalt Fleck

3. Midnight Swirl Fleck

4. Bedrock

5. Neon

Thanks for the tough choice Brian!

My vote is in for Beige/Black Swirl Ebonite, but I'd still participate with anything other than the Bedrock Flake.

My opinions about the choices:

Beige/Black Ebonite

This is what got my vote. Really cool looking material that isn't so common. I'm holding out hope for this one.

Bedrock Flake

On my list of "materials I'd like an Edison pen in" this one ranks in my top 10. So if we end up with this, I'll be satisfied. But for a project like this one, I really want something unique, or at least not all that common. As this is one of Mr. Gray's best sellers, I don't see this as special or unique enough for our project. But, if the group chooses this material, I'll still buy one.

Neon Swirl

This is not something I would have picked on my own. However, as part of a group-buy, I can see myself living with it. The more I look at it, the more I like it. Mr. Gray said this is one of his best sellers, which means, for me, I'm not as interested for this project. Yet again, like the Bedrock Flake, if the group chooses this material, I'll still buy a pen.

Midnight Swirl

I think I'm going to get a pen in this material one day. I keep finding myself drawn to it. This might be my #2 choice. It looks mysterious and interesting without being flashy.

Cobalt Fleck

This material looks really stunning. It reminds me of the Cobalt Edison Nouveau Premiere in Cobalt I am enjoying today. And that's my problem with it. It looks too much like a pen I already have. That makes this material my #5 choice.

As soon as we can purchase pens, I'll immediately buy mine if it is the ebonite, bedrock, neon or midnight. If it ends up being the cobalt, I'll think about it for a day or so and still buy it anyway.

Brian,

You have already made one prototype of each, right? And we are seeing pictures of actual pens in each material? Wow! That's a commitment to the process, thank you! I'm sure the "losers" will find a good home fairly quickly! ;)

Also, you have chosen the color of the fittings (silver or gold) that will go with each body color, right? That's not up for debate, right?

The more I know about computers, the more I like my pens.

The trim has been chosen on that we feel looks best.

Unless there is an overwhelming push to change a certain trim choice, we'll probably stay with what we've posted above.

For instance, the beige/black ebonite definitely screams for gold plating. I feel that every other color above is definitely a good match for their given trim, with the possible exception of the Bedrock.

The Bedrock might look good with gold trim, but I still lean heavily towards rhodium on it.

Honestly, I have trouble picturing each pen with their opposite trim...I think that they all are pretty well matched up.

Thanks!

Beige and Black Swirl Ebonite! notworthy1.gif

It even makes a gold clip look good! Want one of those, definitely...

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

After just a few hours of voting, this has become a two pony race... and not a close race at that.

I honestly have to say I don't warm up to any of the selections. I think I'll have to bow out of the group buy. <sigh>

Fortunately, there are plenty of other materials in Brian's bag of tricks--one of which will make me a lovely Pearl some day!

The beige/black swirl ebonite is the only one of this group that I really like and would want to have. If it wins, I'll be an enthusiastic buyer. Otherwise, I'll have to bow out and consider a custom pen.

So here's how this will run...

6. Ebonite can be done, but price will be higher than acrylic, as ebonite is very expensive. Price is yet to be determined, but I would anticipate an acrylic pen to lie between $160-175, and an ebonite pen to lie between $175-195.

7. Steel nibs only. If you wish to have an 18k nib, then you will need to buy the pen with the steel nib, and then contact me after you receive the pen for an 18k upgrade (nibs unscrew to interchange).

So, just to clarify, the Beige/Black Swirl Ebonite pictured above would be $190 plus the (optional) extra cost to upgrade to an 18k nib. Correct?
