If I wasn't already committed to buying a custom Edison, I'd be in. I will be watching for updates, though, just because I love Edison pens!

I've been studying The Edison Pen Co samples on SmugMug. I picked some acrylics and some ebonites that I like. While the types are in no particular order, I did list the samples in order of my preference within that type.

My overall ranking (at least this morning, I kinda go back and forth a bit :) ) is:

  1. Red/Black Ebonite
  2. Black Rose
  3. Flecked Tortoise
  4. Cappucino Flake
  5. Imitation Horn

Liverman,

Thanks for posting those. Wow. I loooove that copper flake. The violet flake is also really nice.

The ebonites are really interesting though. IIRC, the blue beige ebonite is out due to cost/availability, but I'd be happy with the blue/red/beige, or blue/green/orange. The more I think about this, the more I am leaning towards ebonite. I've already got a bunch of acrylic pens, so why not change it up.

I want one in the Blue/Red/Beige with matching cufflinks and necktie, please.

I know that some of the ebonites I posted (above) will have cost or availability issues. However, I included the blue/beige ebonite to help with the following:

I also wanted to mention and illustrate that some of the more exoctic ebonite patterns - the multi-color ones - appear to be non-uniform in the stock material. Check the Blue/Beige, Blue/Red/Beige and Blue/Green/Orange caps vs. bodies. Even though I like these patterns and they make for very unique (one of a kind) pens, it could lead to each buyer getting a different pattern...and quite possibly not the variant of that material that drew them to it in the first place. For example, I really like the pattern on the body of the Blue/Green/Orange example, but I am not so fond of the pattern of the cap! As I looked across all the examples, the Red/Black ebonites seemed to be the most uniform - fewer surprises when you actually get your pen. The other ebonites appear to be for the true affecianado of the material or for buyers who can see a specific example before they buy.

Solid color ebonites do not have this issue, of course. However, Mr Gray has indicated solid colors will probably not be on the menu.

The advantage of the acrylics is the uniformity of the material. What you see is what you are going to get, pen after pen. Black Rose Acrylic looks an awful lot like Red/Black Ebonite from the pictures.

I did not include solid ebonites or celluloid since those materials, I think, are out of the running (based on reading of this thread and the initial material poll). There were several celluloids that I thought were pretty cool :-). I did include the Lucite Tortoise even though that is not an acrylic.

OK - I've gotten my two cents in :)

Holy Mama Jama!

exactly my thoughts.. depending on what's picked I may back-out and order this beauty.

The Pearl is my favorite Edison Pen design.

I'll bite, but only on the condition I like the material chosen. The one Pearl I've most wanted was one in this material ...

http://edisonpenco.smugmug.com/Pens/The-Pearl/i-vVvG2vC/0/M/IMG7159-M.jpg

... although that's not the best example of a pearl in that material I've seen. There are several other materials I'd be fine with (for example, any of the red/blacks - esp. red/black ebonite or black rose acrylic, also many of the translucent materials) and some I would not. If we can settle on one I like, I'm in.

I love the Pearl, and I would be up for this - but only if I like the choice of material. It totally depends on that factor. So I didn't vote yet because my answer depends on something that hasn't been determined yet.

The Pearl is my favorite Edison form, also. My favorites are the also the red/blacks. However,I really like the orange ebonite!

If someone wanted to give me an Orange pearl, I wouldn't insult them by saying "no." But if were going to do a solid color, I would need for it to be black. Orange wouldn't do it for me. Not many other solids would either. I really hope we can come to an agreement that will include the maximum number of buyers. If that leaves me on the outside looking in, that's okay.

Wow, I haven't been to FPN in ages, but I'm glad Brian linked me to this thread in his email update. I'm in, provided I like the material. I've been itching for an Edison for ages, but couldn't justify the cost... this seems like a good deal price-wise, and it will be a LE, so I think that makes it an even better deal. My favorite material so far is the golden flake (which surprises me, I usually don't like orange-ish pens). I'm also a big fan of most things blue.

I just have a question and my personal opinion:

1) What will make this Pearl a limited edition Pearl besides the low price? I've read through the 3 pages thus far and so far, all i know of this Pearl is this:

- Lower price

-Engraving of the LE number.

Is there a special material that will ONLY be made for this Pearl ( like the Goulet Premiere LE versions) or some other special feature?

2) I have a Pearl, and I'm sure ALOT of people on this forum have a Pearl (The Pearl seems to be the most popular Edison Pen), so won't it makes more sense to have a Pearlette group buy instead, since it's a relatively new pen and there are more people who won't have a Pearlette. I personally make it a rule to not have 2 pens of the same pen model regardless of the material since this will be lighter on my wallet. I also find the Pearl to be slightly too thick for my hands and that a Pearlette will be perfect :P . Just my 2 cents and thoughts on this.

For now, I'll abstain from voting till I know more.

Oh and some of the materials that I love:

This one is a celluloid so most likely, it will not be put into consideration but I just want to say that I love it

You realize that the shine is just lighting and proper polishing, right? As far as I know, none of the current Edison's self-illuminate. Can Ernest apply tritium to his maki-e?:eureka:

I am in definitely but  - I would prefer something in Ebonite like Red/Black or plain Black. This does not say this is a restriction; I will indeed consider what is shown as the prototype and make a firm decision based on this pen. I have a bespoke order in with Brian at the moment so it wont be the 1st or last Edison pen in my limited collection…

Regards to all,

Charlieboy.

Thanks :clap1: Brian for taking on this venture...

I'm out. I think I'll order someday a custom pen, but it'll have to be clipless, ebonite and a bulb filler.

I am in - and thanks to all those people who have created this opportunity.

I am sort of hoping that the material for the pen isn't too outlandish though... :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
