So I just ordered a Hakase (buffalo horn, nipple, teardrop clip, F-nib). I have to wait 10 months and it will cost... rather a lot.

Tell me I'm not mad, because the buyer's remorse is kicking in big time!

Perhaps because some poor little buffalo is running around without a horn and nipple?!

Being such an expensive pen, does the company provide the lifetime warranty on its pens?

As all central bankers are so busy with printing fiat paper money (or adding zeros and more digits on their computers, for that matter), Hakase is going to raise the price of some of the materials.

I've just come to the end of this highly entertaining thread, breathless to know what the pen is actually like. Please tell us.

I am sitting up straight.

AAN - I wrote a review which has since disappeared into the netherworld of old FPN reviews! Needless to say, I sat straight up and was smitten... :P

Huh! I'm still equivocating, and sitting up straight, so lets have some pics and a review as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, how has the original one fared? Used often? Showing any patina? I'm intrigued, but mostly very envious.

Don't worry AAN, I will. However it is always nice to see that others are sharing the excruciating excitement of the ever-too-long wait with me :P

Price is relative. I don't mind spending three figures on jewelry for my wife. I would never spend that much on a pen for myself.

"how do I know what I think until I write it down?"

It's recieved much use, though not as much as I'd have liked. I love the nib (though it is very wet and requires a very dry ink - I use Diamine Registrars' Ink) but find that it is too broad for my usual style of writing. Hence why the new one will have an F nib.

As for Patina: not yet, though I'm determined to do my absolute best!

I thought that too till I did the sums and found that I was spending far more, just in piecemeal. Since my Hakase (and my Nakayas), I now buy nicer - and yes, more expensive - pens, but more seldom. Seems to have actually saved me money (to no doubt spend on jewellery for my wife and presies for my daughter!)

Just got a message. No. 2 is on its way! :bunny01:

Well, I hope you have reserved some time next week to make some pictures and write a review! Btw, your wet pen is perhaps good for using the sepia ink, which has particles. I don't know if F nibs would need to be cleaned more often. The lighter sepia variant is less prone to clogging though than the darker one. Ruud

It's fabulous with the sepia ink (light), but it's not really a practical ink if you're not using the pen multiple times a day - I've left it for a day and come back to have it clogged on more than one occasion.

And no, I can't wait! (Gorgeous Nakaya in you photo btw... is it the kingfisher?)

That Nakaya is the Flowers of all Seasons, see https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/166446-nakaya-flowers-of-all-seasons-maki-e/

At the moment, I have one Nakaya and one Hakase on order, and am looking forward to the fall.... Ruud

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
